Red Crown submitted a new Build:

1990 Blazer - Prom Night Survivor

Father/Son 1990 Blazer project. Body rebuild after being parked outside by previous owner for 13 years after he lent it out to a friends son for prom night. Now totally blown out with rust.

In progress.
At a point here where I need to ask advice regarding the rockers.

When trying to fit the new rockers into the A & B pillar, they are 1/4" to short in length on both sides of truck. Door openings are exactly the same both sides as well. I have compared two different manufactures outer rockers, with no significant differences.

My first thought is to split he rocker and lengthen, but fear I'm missing another greater issues somewhere. Can anyone share the best way to resolve, or point me to another post?

The original inner & outer rockers were gone, so I don't have that as a template, but I don't think that matters. Bottom of original doors measure 39.5" wide, and door gap is uniform all the way around. Cab is supported by rear quarters and , left side cab body mounts. In process of rebuilding the right side body mounts now.

Man you guys in the rust belt are a tenacious bunch. I have no help for you as I've not dealt with that kind of mess, but good luck with the sheet-metal repairs. Do a little searching around here and you'll find a wealth of info on the exact process you are going through.

Good work so far though!

I can't tell you from experience on this body style, but my son is working on his '72 K10 and has had to cut and rework a lot of his patch panels. He had to cut parts of one outer rocker and weld to another, (both new parts) and is probably going to do more cutting to make them fit the truck and match the doors.

So my tip is to check how they fit with the doors too.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The door to opening gaps are pretty generous now. I was able to pull the distance in to work with a ratchet strap from the A to B pillar on passenger side, but with significant effort. Forgot to mention, i have removed the welds on the quarter panel to B pillar, so that is not an issue. When checking the door fit afterward, it functionally works fine but the gap is not clean and uniform as it should be.

I did have a conversation with a collision (repairable) friend of mine, after describing my situation he also advised me to not pull the opening and induce stress into the cab, plus having to labor through the other body line issues later. Since both openings are exactly the same (from measuring and making a template) but with different loss of floor and support, he concluded the opening may not have changed from factory, so splicing the rockers for proper fit may be best.
