I think this is a cool Suburban for a variety of reasons, but I wanted to use this thread to learn a little bit also. What transmission do you guys think is in this thing, and was it for sure swapped at some point?

The Wiki page for the SM465 says it was the only manual trans that was available in the 1987-1991 squares, but this ad has a photo of a 5-speed transmission shifter. This old CK5 thread says that Getrag 5 speed transmissions were offered before the NV4500 came in. That was the first time I had heard of that.

I assumed it was an NV4500, but it looks like the NV4500 wasn't introduced until later (1992/1993?).

Thanks for any teachings, I appreciate it.

Def a trans swap out of a GMT 400, judging by the shifter. 1990 was either a SM465 or a TH400 in a 3/4-ton Burb.

Thanks! Do you know if there is any truth to the Getrag thing in that old thread?

That’s a 4500 shifter knob without a doubt. It’s swapped in too. No squares came with 5-speeds.

Not sure on the getrag crap, I think that could have been a 1/2 ton option on an early 400 truck but not for the 3/4 ton units.

Not “rare”, just not stock in this application.

Ive only seen the a833 on 1 or 2 trucks on BaT, never in flesh. Thats definitely rare.

Although the stick can be swapped out, as a general rule if the handle does not unscrew from the shifter itself, it is a Getrag.
4500s the handle will unscrew from the shifter.
This appears to me to be a Getrag shifter.
A833s have a traditional shifter like a 465.

There was an a833 overdrive manual transmission available for half ton 4x4 squares. It may have been mis identified but no getrags or new venture transmissions were in squares.
Yeah, it doesn't look like one.
The shifter for those are right next to the. Tc case shifter.
It's basically a manual 700r4.

I have one and a nv4500. I need a $$$ adapter to use a np205 with it, so I'm leaning towards the 833.

Seconded.
Could be a 3500, but I doubt they'd go through the hassle and not use a 4500.
