1990 jimmy cutting off!!

driving down the road yesterday and jimmy backfired and went dead...cranked back up ran 200-300 yards and did it again....filled completely up with gas and it has not did it again...not sure if my fuel gauge is going bad or if there's a fuel problem...any help out there
 
How many gallons of gas did it take to fill it?
I have a flaky gauge in my '90, I have ran it low a couple of times and never experienced what you did. But I guess maybe different trucks and conditions could make that big of a difference.
Do you think that it was a lean condition pop?

Took about 15 or so gallons...but really not sure about the size of the tank..I too thought it may have been low on gas...just never seen it do that before!!
 
Well then I would wonder about bad gas , or possibly some other problem. I believe that the small tank in these had a capacity of 25 gallons, and the larger tank is 31 gallons. So I doubt that it was too low on gas.
I wonder if the distributor is having intermittent problems. Maybe it is getting worn?
 
There's a rubber hose that connects your fuel pump to the tube going out of your tank. They get old and crack. Truck will start dieing when your about half tank, then eventually it just won't start anymore even though you can hear the pump run....... I'd bet this is what you have going on. You CANT replace it with just any hose. Need submersible hose. Best idea is that if you have already dropped the tank, or gained access in order to check it..... Just replace the pump while your there And it will come with that hose ususally.
 
If you haven't replaced the pump/in-tank hose in the last few years, I would recommend borrowing a fuel pressure tester and checking the fuel pressure. Test it when the tank is near empty, as a small split is sometimes less obvious when there is fuel surrounding it.

You might check with some of the auto parts stores, out this way Autozone (for one) loans tools for free, fuel system pressure tester is one of them.
 
50688843254__CE5C71ED-B860-4E05-9574-285EBF5C45E2.JPG My 1991 k1500 did the same shit frustrated the crap out of me... I ended up thinking it was the ignition pick coil. Upon tear down of the distributor I removed the three screws that hold the points down and BAM! The magnet for the coil was broken into multiple pieces!!! Here is a picture.
