1990 k5 into 4x4

So on this truck I have not had to put it into 4x4 since I have owned it and a guy rebuilt the t-case until today. What I noticed that is different from my 86 (my memory) is that going down the road at speed it does not always want to pull into 4x4 when off the gas, but will sometime, the other thing that I don't seem to remember is that when pulling it to 4x4 I thought there was a catch to keep it from going to neutral as I can pull right through 4x4 into neutral?? Something does not seem correct....


Can someone straighten me out here.....

My NP208 will sometimes not go into 4 hi while I'm driving at slow speeds. I normally always know when I'll need 4 wheel drive, so I come to a stop, put the transmission in neutral, and then shift the t-case. I know you shouldn't have to do that at low speeds and going to 4 hi.
When going to neutral in the t-case, there should be a notch in the shifter at the floor that makes you push the shifter to the right before it will go into neutral or 4 lo.
Both of those should apply for the 208 and 241, not a 203 or 205.

So is the notch built in the tunnel sheetmetal? Possibly a tab might have broke off?
 
Without looking at it, I beleive it is built into the plastic bezel that the shifter sits in. It's been a few years since I've had the shifter apart though.
 
Hmmm. You need to pull off your plastic bezel. I happen to have my shifter out while bedlining my interior (and rebuilding my 208). The Z-gate, the part that makes you push it to the right, is part of a metal bracket that mounts to the shifter assembly, but under your plastic trim bezel. You should NOT be able to pull straight through with this in place. At least this is all true for the stock 208 parts on my '88. Pic below.

If the z gate bracket is supposed to be on the NP241 then if my memory services me I think that bracket is missing.....
 
If the truck has not been shifted into 4wd for awhile the external linkages are likely crudded up some along with the internal components possible sticky some. Add in the t-case being rebuilt and that compound the problem. After I rebuilt my 241 in the '90 it shifted pretty notchy for awhile but has returned back to "normal", or the way it had been for the previous 10 years I have owned it. Of course there is always the chance it was not rebuilt correctly such as one of the pads on the shift forks got cracked or fell off.

I've owned my '90 since 1994 when it had 49k on the odometer so I should have a pretty good feel for the way it should shift. It has always easily shifted in 4 hi whether stopped or driving down the road at speed. I know I have slipped it into 4 hi going at least 30-40 mph....if I need 4wd on the road I'm probably not going any faster than that already. Never tried shifting into 4wd with the rear tires already spinning as I know you shouldn't do this. Going to 4 Low has always required stopping and putting the trans in neutral. You can get it in 4 low without going to neutral in the trans but almost always grinds.
 
I dropped it in the mail tonight before I came to work. It should be there in a few days. I did choose the cheapest option, so it could be five days....
