I have a 1991 silverado k5. I want to take the top off but it has shoulder seat belts for the back seat. I don't have the owners manual. what do I do with the top piece that has the retraction stuff in it? Is that supposed to mount some place that I can't see??

I think you might be able to use an 89' rear seat that has the belts already built into them. You might have to add a "receiving clip" on each side of the wheel well for the buckle to snap into.

I don't know exactly what the 91' look like on the base of the floor....

Here is a pic of Teck's rear that looks like my 89'....

My '90 model has the same Stoopid design. I don't know what GM was thinking when they mounted the shoulder harnesses to the top. My seats were shot anyway, so my solution was installing an '02 Suburban rear seat with the shoulder harnesses built in (modifications required).

Pull your carpet up and see if you have any bolt holes in the floor for the buckles. If so, head to the junkyard. I replaced mine so be warned, a lot of bolts are hard to move and are rusted tight. I used an angle grinder to grind off the bolt and then picked up new ones at Home Depot.

I have the same issue, on the '91 seats the receiver end that the belt clips into is mounted to the seat, so we need to come up with a retractable lap belt that would bolt to the floor by the wheel well... Anyone done this? I also wondered about installing some sort of racing harnesses back there (I have kids). I want to make sure I don't lose anybody and really want to put a softtopper on!!!

Jeff, is that the factory setup in you '89? My '91 only has a center lap belt and receivers for the passenger and drivers side mounted to the seat. The belts retract into the top and bolt fast to the floor in approximately the same location as what you have pictured.

Yea, that's what my 89' looks like. The bare metal shot is someone elses rig but looks just like mine as well. On the bench seat pic, the left most buckle extends and retracts. The far right side does the same. The center is a typical lap belt set-up.

I just don't know what's under the 90 and 91 truck floors. I would almost guess those nut holes are there.....:dunno:

I'd be willing to bet they used the same bolt hole, but just switched to a different style belt. The question is can we get a retractable belt that would mount in that location and work with what we already have on our seats?

I also have a 91. I use to remove the seatbelt bolts at the floor which allowed the seatbelts to remain attached to the top when you removed it. Works great if you don't mind not having seatbelts on the backseat when the top is off. I eventually converted my shoulder seatbelts to lap belts by cutting them near the top. So now instead of having 2 shoulder seatbelts and one lapbelt in the middle, I have 3 lapbelts that don't retract. It leaves a little extra belt laying on the seat, but the only modification tool you need is a pair of scissors.
