1991 K5 Work in progress

Just rub it in about the spotless sheet metal . Jokes aside, that is a pretty good idea. I have been thinking of some way to do a type of basket frame for the whole tub since the inner fenders are pretty bad too, and really, incorporating some sliders would be real easy. Not sure how much my truck will see the rocks to slide on, but I'd rather have 'em and not need 'em etc etc. Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on a welder soon so I can start making some of these dreams a reality. BTW: What would be a good gauge square tube to use for sliders?

Haha, dont worry, I paid for it by countless hours of fighting it to make it cooperate.

2x6 with 1/4in wall would work perfectly. Probably a little heavy and thick, not sure exactly what fellas use for it, but I could guarantee you could slide that thing down a handrail like a skateboard with no doors on it and it would stay square.

Inner fenders, blah toss em. I did and never looked back. Granted I have to wash it more, but thats the name of the game.

If you ever want that thing painted let me know. Not only do we build bumpers we can lay some paint too :thumb: Shot a hood last night for my k10. And shooting a front clip for a 03 cavalier right now. But I'd rather paint trucks. Haha

I would do sliders as well with that much material missing.

As for the rear, the springs you have now will work just fine with a shackle flip.

Being that it has a 6" lift up front a regular shackle flip would be 2" short, but I have considered a 6" flip. The other route I have been considering is a 4" flip and 2" lift springs if I could find them to increase flex a little bit. As far as sliders, I will probably put some on when I get into repairing the body. I will also be putting in a cage in the back so my kids can come to the dunes with me. I have so many ideas... can't wait to start putting them in motion. Right now I'm trying to work out a few bugs in my heating/defrost before the snow shows up.

You could also just go with a zero rate in the rear and a slightly longer shackle.

Martin

Not a bad idea. That's still gonna be a while before I get to that so I'll figure it out then. Most of the work I do will be cleaning up mistakes and laziness from the PO and repairing/rebuilding the body tub. Lately I have been considering a fiberglass tub, but I don't know too much about them. I still have some time to do research on them, this is going to be a slow build due to $ and time constraints. If anybody has any input or links on fiberglass tubs that would be appreciated.

Edit: Did some research and pretty much immediately dismissed the fiberglass tub route. Way to expensive and I would rather work with metal.

I can't beleive you guys would fix a body in that condition? :eek1:

Even the worst ones around here have no rot... no salt here, just some water rust...

Crazy what you can get used to ain't it? That's how most vehicles here are to, salt eats everything. My Sub came from Texas and was only here for a few years so it didn't have that kinda rot. My old ones all did though, most of em where Flintstone style. Haha.

Wow that brings back HORRIBLE old memories from when I lived in NJ, I left in 1981 and have never lived near salt since!

You could get a runner around here for about a grand and $600 to $800 to ship?

And thats why i get so pissed off when all the guys trim and veat the piss out of perfect rust free sheet metal, because this is what we deal with. That would be classified as normal rust up here. Thats not even bad bad

If you see it in person, it is pretty bad. I have seen worse, but it's still bad. My cousin had one that was worse. He took it to a gravel pit and hit a hill a little too fast. When his Jimmy got air the back half of the body actually separated from the frame and when he landed it slammed back down. After that he decided he didn't want to ride it that hard any more. He's lucky it didn't cause more damage or an accident.

Update: I got my heater controls working properly, after removing all of my in dash insulation from various locations where it had been stockpiled by a previous resident, who also left behind lots of evidence:poo: of his stay. After clearing the debris out of the way, all I had to do was hook up the vacuum supply to the proper spot and voila, I had leaves and candy wrappers swirling around my head. Looks like I will actually be able to see where I'm driving this winter.:thumb: Whoever did all of the work previously on this truck should be issued a restraining order... from anything mechanical. Seems like every time I dig into something, even as small as that, there is some hacked up crap job that doesn't work right:doah:. On the bright side, I have definitely learned a lot about this truck already, with tons of more learning to come.
