so looks like im getting a 91 k5 today for 650 it actually runs and everything the guy just wants it gone wasnt gonna work for what he wanted the only problem is it just has a 305 in it according to the add :sign27:. plan on picking up a 350 used and having it rebuilt before it goes in any suggestions while its out of the truck?

Did the 91's still have the frame problems around the steering box that earlier k5 suffered from? If so Id check for cracks there. Might also check all steering componets while there is more room to work if needed.

but if the 305 runs why mess with it just enjoy it
jim

Yes, ALL squarebody GM trucks had the frame cracking issue.

Hard to go wrong if it runs and drives for $650. Unless its a total rust bucket

i had a 305 in my '85 and when it was geared proper it got good fuel economy. does that one use the same computer and such as a '91 350?

The '85 would have been a carb'd engine and the '91 was TBI, so no they wouldn't use the same computer and such.

Back to the OP, all the ads and specs I have ever seen only show the 350 or 6.2 available in '91 but I wouldn't be my life saving's on the fact that 305's weren't available from the factory. Always a good chance it was swapped in after the original engine gave up the ghost. I've seen several trucks that originally had larger engines that had 305's swapped in simply because they were much cheaper as the demand for them is much lower, and the owner's just wanted the truck to start and get from point A ot point B (there is a farmer in my home town with a '77 K30 with a swapped in 305 running around that they use regularly for hauling wagons, think it originally had a 400???).

I have a 87 305 with 3:08 it gets 13 mpg city and 17 to 19 mpg on highway depending on the speed I drive. I have to do this .....

yea, my '85 had a carb on it :eek1:. perhaps i should have specified THAT 305 in HIS truck, sorry....he didn't say it was a carbed motor so i took a guess it still had the TBI. i believe the 305's and 350's use different injectors, so maybe a different computer?...i'm new to TBI. as far as i know 1987 was the last year GM offered a 305 in the K-5 and '87 was the introduction of TBI......as far as i know.
