1991 V2500 Suburban losing all electrical power, cont.

I reread 1st post cause I have CRS ( can't remember s*&^ ) Is the red brake light still on dim ? If so that says to me the brake warning circuit is shorted to ground. Since it is dim it may be grounding though another circuit before the load. could be mid loom melty issue, might be printed circuit on instrument panel.
The intermittent nature of this symptom makes it difficult to find. My best tool would be to have engine running and move the crap outta everything, under dash and hood till it fails, then go from there.
 
Do you have tilt column? I had a 84 suburban that had funky dash lighting and guage issues at third position down. Eventually changed the column and problems went away
 
The temp gauge is wonkey so those are on my list. I unplugged the abs harness so that light has been off for a bit, I’m trying to replicate it.
 
I had a 86 M1009 (Military Blazer), Diesel with a strange electrical issue and found the bulkhead connector behind the fuse panel was loose. Had a bolt on the engine side to tighten which I did and issues disappeared. Not sure if the 91 has the same connector....I should go out and look but it is still cold and wet out.
 
It does and I pulled it apart last week and checked everything for corrosion and loose wires, it all looked good. The 1/4” center bolt wasn’t snug but it is now. I also pulled the starter and the nut for the battery cable and hot wire was finger tight, plus the fuseable link didn’t have an end on it, just bare wire wrapped around the post and smashed down with the battery cable nut. I don’t have a terminal that size so I’m grabbing one tonight.

So far so good, pulled an 18’ trailer loaded down for 60 miles highway and in town and it did great! Since fixing that wire is has run much better, the bad continuity must have been affecting it.
 
I normally go after the batt cable tightness at starter, and fuse links, in many post. I didn't in this thread :doah:. I thought I had. I have seen loose battery cable on the starter lug many times, esp on chevy V8, since they are hard to get to tighten. I have even seen them loose on Toyota's 4 cylinder that aren't hard to get to. So I believe it has something to with heat cycles, causing them to loosen.

Well Wes, we'll just dock your pay this week :haha:. You didn't mention the starter terminal because it was covered in Post #2 :waytogo::

...I don't see mention of the connections at the starter, but loose or corroded there could give you temporary no-power situations, as all the power in the truck is tied in there.
