hey guys, i know its not the usual car to ask questions about but my girl friends accord squeals reeeally loud for about 8 seconds when its cold at start up, and if it hasnt been started in about 2 hours it squeals less, and when its at running temp, it doesnt squeal at all. i replaced both belts and i know they r tight as they should be. could it be an alternator starting to go? or a PS pump?

Sounds like a loose belt for sure even though you said they're tight. You might try spraying some belt dressing on them and see if that helps.

If the problem is a bearing, grease probably won't fix it.

ya, i was thinking it might help or eliminate the squeal for a little bit to figure out what bearing it actually is thats seizing/grinding a little at start up and making the belt squeal.

What is it with these cars, two of my neighbors both have Accords that do the exact same thing :screwy:
Who needs an alarm clock when you have a squeeling belt to wake you up in the morning :doah:

Sounds like a belt squeel for sure. Maybe just a stiffer rubber compound in the new belts doesn't allow them to conform around the pulleys until they warm up a little. I hate belt dressing since it doesn't really fix the problem and is a royal pain to clean off. I've had to sand/scuff pullies before to allow a new belt to break in and mesh with the old pulley surface.

New belts will stretch, so they need retightened, which is why auto tensioners are so nice.

Sides of the belts are glazed. My VW does this after I blast through really big puddles of water and some of it gets on the belts. Dab little bits of vaseline on the sides of the belts, a tiny amount is all that's needed to completely wipe out belt noise.

hmm weird, i try that too, thanks for all the tips guys! she says thanks too. ill try them when shes out of work.

I have one of these DO NOT PUT BELT DRESSING ON IT these belts come pre dressed if you put the spray on belt dressing it will eliminate the factory belt dressing I replaced the belt put belt dressing on every couple of days to keep it quiet it worked temporarily but eventually the belt just got real slick so it wouldnt drive the accessories I just had to replace the belts again and it squeals again after about a month with new belts tried retensioning belts didnt do anything I just learned to live with it

puttin vasoline or any lubricant only allows the belt to slip & not squeal

i had a friend who quietened his squeal by soaking the belts w/spray slick 50..i laughed so hard when he opened his hood and broke out the little spray can slick50

Sounds to me that it is time to replace the squirrel. It may be on its death bed.
If the squirrel still appearers lively............
Check the idler and tensioner pulleys

tensioner pulleys are very probable here, seen alot of them do as you describe, they have some sort of elastomer rubber(like engine mount rubber) in them iirc..some do and it loosens and lets the tensioner pulleys squeal

there are no pulleys on there made for just tensioning that i saw.there r studs with 2 nuts i used to tighten both new belts on there. there is an idler pulley if you consider it a tensioning pulley. but i will check all the pulleys out again later, it hasnt cooled off yet so i dont no if my belt adjustments r gonna work or not. and i tried that vasoline trick on the sides of the belts...so even if it doesnt solve the actual problem of slipping when it is started when cold but just quiets it, i dont think she will care as long as it stops the REEALLY loud squeal. o ya...260,000miles and counting on this beast:D

Here's a suggestion only a Honda tech would make (me)
Pull the dist cap and look inside...if theres a brownish dust you found your noise.
The dist bushing will eventually wear out, 200K+ miles and almost seize the shaft. Causing that horrible squeal, sometimes cold and others it will do it all the time.

Its pretty wild. I have seen them sooo seized that you cant turn them with your hand or channel locks but the cars will run.

haha wow, i guess a honda tech would only know that one, thanks a lot, ill check that today. o ya, i also tried re adjusting both belts and that vasoline trick on the sides of the belts and had no luck with that. but next time i see her ill check all the pulleys and check the dist. cap.
