yep a 93 astro work van is getting its guts ripped out in my shop...its a 4.3 v6 i dont know about the trans tho, it was a work van. it was running and driving but only in 1st & 2nd gear. it wouldnt shift up past 2nd, but motor seemed fine, so i decided to use the drivetrain in this....

but im not sure how to go about keeping the efi in this build, so ive been thinking about just putting a carb & intake on it & use a reg 2wd th350 that i have, that i think is good.

BUT i like the idea of the efi and getting the overdrive trans fixed,(this thing is so light it should feel peppy & get pretty good mpg) but im scared its above my skill level. i may would have tranny built by some 1 else. i'm scared of the wiring...

the reason im so scared is because i have never taken the time to understand efi setups. so, recently i've been thinking of a stand alone ecm, that has all the wires marked & i can understand that, but i would need some kind of trans control, wouldn't i?

how hard is it to use the wire harness that's on engine and the oem ecm? it has some plugs that im not sure where they should go once the drive-train is in that 70 k5. they went to wiring that's still in the van, which i still have the van & i would like to try & keep everything/as much as i can from it, like the steering column w/wiper on the turn signal, headlight controls from dash(at least the wires to the switch/lights) the fuse block, radio harness, tail light wires etc, ...i need some advice & pointed in the right direction to start learning fuel injection...what/how would you do if it were your project?

i also would like to know if the 10 bolt rear parts that's in van will fit in 10b in my 2wd k5? i have no idea of year of rear in k5. it has nothing on the rear end, just the flange on end of axle tube, can i take from backing plate-out off of the vans 10b and just put it on the flange on the 10b that's in my k5? also the work van seems to have some kind of limited slip in the axle(with 1 tire off ground it wasn't free to spin), will that "posi" unit swap over to just any other 10b? the rear out of the astro van is to wide for the k5 or i would just swap it in, but the k5 has a 10b rear in it minus brakes rear cover, i haven't inspected the gears....thanks guys, i know with a lil info from ya'll i can get some of these projects done, all i have is time...& occasionally i have money too.. :)

I would not do the V6 if it was my project.

Swapping the EFI over would not be hard just using a van wiring harness will be a pain be cause it is going to be shorter.

Third vote for no 4.3 pos in a first gen. Less power than a 350 but similar fuel mileage...

I'd aim for a TBI 350/700R-4 combo if you're looking for outright drivability.

There are several "10 bolts" GM built, a 7.62", 8.2" and 8.5". None are great, although an 8.5 in that Blazer would be OK. Chances are good the Astro got one of the smaller 10 bolts. You don't want the Gov-Lock it had anyways. Better to have the current K5 10 bolt geared to your liking and add a decent full case limited slip. Auburn, Detroit true-trac, or similar.

Short version, crush the Astro for beer money and find a better drivetrain.

I agree with no 4.3. Put one in my moms 35 Chevy. Car only weighs 2600lbs. So it's ok in it. The EFI is no big deal to swap over. Used all stock van parts with an aftermarket harness. Only one sending unit wire had to be changed.

An early 90's pickup with a 350 TBI should be easy to come by. Use that for a donor.
