This engine is in a little truck I have. 1994 S15 Jimmy.

It is prone to several issues, so I will share them in case someone else needs help.

Rough idle on this vehicle is usually caused by something different than on later years.
But, I just repaired my truck and it is good as new. I had to search s10 forums, to get all the answers that I needed, so I am posting what I have done here just in case.

This truck would idle horrible and ran rich.
Solution, change the "nut kit" ACDELCO GM# 17112705, found it on Ebay for $53 including shipping, from Bob Rush , of Specialty parts warehouse, it came next day! This part is the fuel supply line and return line to the spider. The spider is where the CPI is for the Vortec engine. It is located under the Plenum, which is the pretty, Humpy, top cover to the intake manifold. I think the design of this plenum cover is why these are called vortec engines, to spite the fact that vortec is wrote on it.
I changed the "nut kit" the only hard part was reaching the back retaining bolt, it is size 30 torx, I had to use a loose torx bit and turn it by hand with a 1/4 box wrench. Took about 20 minutes to back this bolt out.

The other thing I did was clean out the EGR, it was stuck in the open position with carbon in it. I also scrapped out all of the carbon from the ports leading to the EGR.

Put it all back together and it runs great!

I also recently replaced the rubber intake boot for the air intake.

Removed the cat and placed a short straight pipe in its place to the stock muffler. Runs very good now.

The Vortec classification is from the heads, and has nothing to do with the plenum or CPI. My 94 Astro is a Vortec 4.3, but it has TBI, it is still a Vortec. There are some differences from what I understand between the head design for the CPI and the TBI, but I don't know the specifics. Vortec heads have higher flow than the older non-Vortec heads.

I still have the 93 Jimmy and have recently done a complete tune up, new cap, rotor. wires, plugs. I also replaced the CPI spyder injector and fuel filter. It now feels like it did when new.

I am driving it as a daily driver now. I get 24 MPG.
