my new too me 1995 c2500 truck ,had a small exhaust leak .which i thought came from the donuts, which ended being the 2 rear manifold bolts that were broke. i managed to get them out last night, but when i put manifold back on, the holes don,t line up on rear cylinders. managed too install left manifold but had to make a spanner with a 7/8 bolt too stretch it.didn,t try the right one yet. thinking maybe this is why the bolts broke! anybody every had this problem?

you need one of these. exhaust manifold spreader.

you can get them at most parts stores. Start with the middle 2 bots and work your way out.

so this is normal too some point. was thinking i had bad manifolds, and if the bolts would break again?my 7/8 bolt kind off worked ok glad too no a tool exist!

Yea, it is a very common problem. I think the one at sears is like 12 bucks or something like that.

It is a common problem and if the holes aren't off too far then drill them slightly larger AND use the exhaust manifolder spreader like Orange85 posted. If the holes are off a good bit then i would recommend buying another manifold becuae the bolts will break again. You could also buy a decent set of direct replacement shorty headers and cure the whole problem while freeing up the exhaust for a little more power.

I once had a manifold that "shrunk" like that we were trying to install at the junkyard for a customer to make a few bucks, and we feared trying to "spread" it apart with a tool or bolt & nut might crack it..my co-worker had a brainstorm,it was cold in the winter that day and we had a woodstove going in the office--he put the manifold on the hot coals in it for about 5 minutes and used tongs to pull it out and used his welding gloves to hold it in place while I put the center bolts in--the other bolts went in a little hard, but they went in with no stretching needed!..:D

i had this happen to me once, i called auto zone to see if they had a manifold spreader they rented. they asked what i was talking about, i explained & they laughed saying no such tool existed..advance & orielys both said they had never heard of such a tool either..i knew i had seen 1 before tho...i wonder where i can find 1 in case it ever happens again, maybe napa has it..i like to have specialty tools on hand, especially since its not that expensive..!

thanks for your replies! short on cash "for my play things" ! so i will leave manifolds there for now ,but that header set is not too expensive maybe next winter. i got new napa plugwires there the warrenty for life, could they work with headers or do you need a special wire.
