Will these still be TBI? Looking at a 95 G20 with a 4.3L and lower miles(89K on it), but I don't want to mess with an early Vortec.

NO, not sure on the van, but all the s-10 went to the first design vortec in 95, maybe even 94, but 95 would definatly not be tbi, in an s-10, I would assume a van too.

but I don't want to mess with an early Vortec.
All the 4.3 engines from 1985 up are vortec engines. The whole 4.3 engine series was called 4.3 Vortec from the start. They were carbed, TBI, and MPFI. (CPI)
I could be wrong. But I believe all truck 4.3L after 1992 were CPI not TBI

Are they reliable and any better than TBI engines? I have had friends have bad experiences with the "Vortec" 4.3(CPI I guess) in 96-97ish S-10's, but that could be the result of other things as well.

Won't be driven by me, but I'll be the one doing the maintenance on it.

I suspect they suffer from the same problems as the 8 cylinder CPI motors. Not sure I'd say the 8 cylinder problems are enormous, but it seems like when people say they have a problem with them, it's ALWAYS related to the CPI itself.

Personally choosing between that and TBI, I'd choose TBI.

the main problems they have with fuel are the spiders get holes rubbed in them, then you have to buy an assembly, but if that's been done once, it's usually good to go.

'95 could still be TBI, even in an S10. I don't think the full size trucks and vans got the CPI until '96, and then it was like the CPI in the Vortec 5.7.

Well I'm going to try and look at it tomorrow and see. Hopefully it's TBI.. I for the most part understand how it works and am comfortable working with it. CPI would be a bit much

Looks like you are right. I looked up injectors for a 92 van and they list TBI injectors. The smaller S-10 trucks and vans were CPI. Looks like the full size trucks/vans ran TBI on 4.3 till 96.

I have seen the Astro went from TBI to CPI in 93. Can't say for certain though, since I have never owned a newer version.

TBI was used through 95
CPI was used 92-95
starting in 96 they had SFI

CPI has its issues but the base engine has a lot more power than the TBI, The CPI motors are the most powerful 4.3's besides the turbo ones

Went and looked at it today, it's definitely TBI :D Runs good, has a few little issues(window switches and a motor needed). The interior isn't great, but it's servicable.
