Picked up a 1995 S10 Blazer 4x4 from a buddy for $250. He owned it for several years, and about 30,000 miles ago paid a local shop to rebuild the 4.3L.

About two years ago it developed an extremely loud knock from the engine. Fast forward to yesterday, he calls me up and asks if I want it. I told him I'd come over and check it out and we'd make a deal. I knew it apparently had an engine knock. So we put a charger on it, had a few beers, and when the battery was charged enough I went in and cranked it over. Surprisingly it fired right up after two years sitting.

Now, it had one hell of a tap. It does not sound like a rod knock at all, it sounds more like a REALLY bad lifter, but it really didn't sound like it was coming from the heads. It sounded like it was coming from the bottom end of the engine, but way to "light" of a sound to be a rod. One thing that made it difficult is that she wants to idle at 3,000 RPM's. I assume the IAC valve? Maybe one hell of a vaccuum leak but the idle is smooth and steady. I put it in gear so that I could drop the RPM's to try and listen to the engine better.

I shut it down, and we decided we'd try and drive it over to my house (couple blocks away on back roads) I didn't much care if it made it or not, I wasnt sure I was going to fix the engine, but rather just part the truck out. Well, sure enough it made the drive home like a champ. Trans. shifted fine, everything was great aside from that really loud tap from the engine.

This morning, I went out and fired it up to bring it around back to the garage. My truck is in the garage now, so I wanted to back the blazer up next to the garage. I get it over there, put it in reverse, and give it a little gas to get over a hump. All of a sudden, a THUD sound comes from the bellhousing area and I lose my reverse, drive, and even park. No gear at all. But get this, the "engine tap" quit and instead turned into a moderate rubbing/grinding sound from near the bellhousing. Engine still was strong. I shut it down and tried to start it back up, the starter worked HARD to try and turn the engine, as if it were half stuck in gear or like the flywheel was bent or something.

What in the hell could this be? What could have caused what sounded like a terrible lifter tap from the bottom end, and that would also lose mobility if it broke? Lots of things make sense but nothing I can think of in particular would be responsible for all those things by itself... Anyone have any ideas? Throw em at me! Thanks

remove TC cover and check flywheel -to-TC bolts
or even flywheel to crank bolts

something may have let loose
it's a start

Also, check that the bellhousing is mated up to the back of the engine properly.

I had a knock coming from the bellhousing area and took it to the local tranny shop.

They said the T/C bolts were hitting the cover and wanted to grind the cover.

Knowing that wasn't a fix I had my son, who is a certified mechanic look at it.

In 2 minutes he saw the engine/transmission had a 1/4" gap at the top.

Bolted it up the right way and all the problems solved.

ETA: Longshot but who knows? I would never have thunk it and thought the tranny shop should have spotted it right off the bat.

When I started reading your post I immediately thought loose converter bolts or cracked flexplate.
Now it's completely disconnected, it could be the bolts are disconnected now and when you're trying to start it they are wedging and grinding.
If it was a broken flexplate it would start easily but possibly still make noise
