So it drives fine in 1st and second but it will not go past second.
Could it be something simple or should I just rebuild it?
I just got the suburban and it will be a family vehicle, 162 k on the clock pretty clean drives nice.
Wouldn't mind spending the money on a rebuild if it needs it but money is a little tight and if it can get me a few months or a year it's better.
I do have a used one I could swap in but history unknown, gm goodwrench but not sure how many miles on it.
What say the brotherhood?

Besides some possible electrical issues preventing the shift, the most common issues preventing 3rd and 4th is a broken sprag and or fried 3/4 clutch pack.

What's the fluid look and smell like?

It looks fine, that is why I am hesitant to pull it out and rebuild it

I had the same problem earlier this year on my 2002 and it was a failed 3-4 shift solenoid. Cheap and easy job.
