Slight tangent: I seem to recall some of the Hummer H1 wheels having a five point fastener.

I'd drill & retap the box, but that's 'cuz I enjoy that stuff Then at least you can use standard fasteners.

As for carrying metric wrenches, I expect to do so, not least for rounded off inch fasteners

The thing holding me back from re-tapping the threads is that it could create a real nightmare if I ever broke on a trail somewhere and had to swap in a new steering box. The replacement box would be metric and would not match my "clever" SAE-converted box and bolts.

I'm not sure how a modded box would go over as a "core" either.... Ultimately the box I'm mocking up with goes to HOWE and they may rebuild this exact box (assuming the box checks out) or they might start with a new core and transfer my pitman arm and markings for steering travel over to the new one.

Unfortunately, the Unimog stuff also uses metric bolts so I'm fighting a losing battle.....

I don't know about the 0 metric policy. Do you really want to find that one remaining rogue metric when you're broken down somewhere? Maybe never having a vehicle older than the 80's has jaded me to give up.

And a 13 just cuz 1/2 is tight on there

There is something that feels really GOOD (and patriotic) about spinning SAE wrenches on a classic old Chevy. Hard to explain, but it just feels "right" to me.

Sorry to hijack (and this horribly insensitive, but...)

When my now ten year old daughter was two she would walk around all the time saying "Matt Damon!" - it would always good for a laugh from her mom and dad. Wife and I were saying that all the time to each other when we would do something dumb: "Der, Der, Der Matt Damon!"

This backfired on us one time when we went to local county fair and were having lunch. A mentally handicapped person came up to us and started talking to us, and she must have sounded like the first part of "Der, Der, Der..." Next thing I know my beautiful two year old daughter is yelling "Matt Damon!" at this poor lady. So embarrassed, lol. My brother was with us and was laughing his ass off!
