1997 GMC questions

my work sells old trucks and equipment when they are old worn out or just no longer used. im buying a 1997 GMC half ton 4x4 ext. cab with a 350 and a 5 speed. one of the mechanics was out in the snow and put it in 4wd while stuck and tires spinning and shattered the front diff. includeing the housing. so they deemed it too expencive and too old to repair. im getting it for $1000. the front diff isnt my concern though as i already want to SAS a newer truck. my question is what is the 5 speed trans and also what spline count is it going to be? will i be able to do a 203/205 doubler without an adapter? what transfer case did they use? im going to use a chevy d60 so the transfer case has to be changed anyway. and i know theres a fourm for the ifs trucks but nobody is ever on it and all they talk about is headlights.

i dont know too much about the manuals in OBS trucks but, IIRC its a nv4500... should be 27 spline output and have a 241 or 243(pushbutton non-autotrac) behind it.... you will need a tcase that is VSS ready if you plan on running a gm front like i am. so your choice is a 241 out of a 90-91 K5 or burb, from what ive heard a VSS 205 was made in like 91 but i wouldnt count on finding one of those

I don't think they put the 4500 in half tons. I could be wrong though. I think it's a 3500.
My buddies got a '93 half ton 4x4 ext cab, definitly not a 4500.

It's easy to tell though, the 4500 with have a granny first, the 3500 will not.

Half tons all got NV3500s, 3/4 tons and 1 tons got NV4500s. The 3500s will last if you don't beat the crap out of them, and are actually a pretty nice transmission. I like the one I've got in my DD behind the 4.3L...

Your truck will probally have an NP241 or NP243 as mentioned above, don't know much about the spline counts, but I think it may be possible to use a 208 as well.

my mistake on the trans... and 208s along with 89' 241s have mech speedo which cant be used

Ah yes, didn't even think about the speedo stuff, 90-91 NP241 is it for you then!
