I have a chance to buy my brother's 1997 Honda Civic 2 door. It has the automatic transmission in it and it runs great, well, except for the transmission. You have to manually downshift to start off from a stop. It's been a while since I've been in it but it's done it for the past year and he's still been driving it until he just bought a new truck.

Does anyone have any idea on what could be the problem? Is a new transmission in its future? Or is this an easy fix that's common with these cars? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

I would be real interested to know if the battery went dead right before it started. I have seen several people try to jumpstart a Honda or replace a battery and reverse polarity when they did it. If they were lucky, it just blew the ten dollar main fuse. If not, it smoked the trans ECU.

Not a common problem at all. Actually, never heard of it. I will do some checking here.

FYI... I've worked for Honda for almost 20 years.

Thanks man! But I'm almost positive he hasn't jumped it off or anything like that. I talked to my guy at O'Rielley's this morning and he said he's heard about it happening a good bit. Said it was the shift solenoid on top of the transmission. I figure it couldn't hurt to at least try that before I go tearing into getting the transmission. But I'll check all of the under hood fuses just in case.
