I am looking for a source for information on the newer style trucks. Im not sure were to go and am open to any suggestions.

If anyone can help here I will post my problem.

1999 GMC Suburban
150,000 Miles

Problem:
I was driving and then all of a sudden when I hit the gas while already moving it wanted to shut down, stumbling when I let off it seemed to be ok again, but it wasn't. I got a ride back to my house (pure luck) grabbed a chain and my truck drug it home and tried to start it. it started for a few seconds and then shut off again. I havent been able to get it started since.

1. Replaced Fuel Filter there was pressure in the line of course
2. Checked For Spark OK
3. Fuel Pump Hums As It Should and was replaced 8-10 months ago
4. Plug Wires Look Good

4.looked at the cap and rotor looks like it should be replaced took sand paper and went over all the contacts and put it back together still nothing.
any suggestions?

I am not sure but the check gauges light may have come on.
was getting oil pressure full of gas and the temp was normal.
no check engine light was on so i dont think there were any codes.

thanks for the help in advance.

TPS? or some sort of sensor?

I dont know what sensor it would be but the tps wouldnt cause it to not start at all would it?

and giving it gas and putting it under load would make it want to shut off but since it wont start now my trouble shooting as come to an upbrupt end.

not sure on the 65, I think it is somewhere up there, I think 60 sounds more like it. If it isn't at 60, find somewhere to block off the return line, if it still doesn't come up, it would be the pump, if it comes up, then the regulator would be the problem. I haven't seen a whole lot of those regulators go bad, but countless number of pumps, even pumps that were new out of the box didn't work.

so I guess ill just check the fuel pressure it was running fine it seemed to me it would have been a sensor or something a little easier. I just dont want it to nickel and dime me.

I dont have a book as of yet but could someone give me a general location of the fuel pressure regulator? I wasnt able to find it.

under the manifold, i believe.

i know the lsx motors requre about 50-55 to crank and idle and want 60 at high rpms...not sure with load on them, but above 5K my friends was at about 60-62 psi. The older vortecs take about the same pressure i believe. I am actually running a fuel pump for a 96-97 vortec 350 in my blazer with my 02 5.3.

It sounds EXACTLY like a fuel pressure issue tho. for some reason mine has had fuel issue after fuel issue since the swap...on the 4th pump and now i think the regulator went bad. It can actually run ok on low pressure with no load, but i wouldn't run it long like that since it can EASILY lean it out. Mine was cranking with 52 psi (where it should be) then jump up for a second then down to low to mid 40s and stayed there. Would still hit limiter and sounded ok at middle 40 psi pressure range.

First thing i would do is check fuel pressure and go from there...I am 98% sure its either pump or regulator. I know you said it was replaced 8 months ago...what brand? i hope not airtex or master. they both suck. we had a discussion with someone from advance today about them, our airtex at oreillys and their master pump (made by the same people i think) suck badly. Delphi/delco is the way to go.

thanks for the info very informative!!

i dumped some wd40 (all that i had to use at the time) in the tbi and it started and ran for a few minutes currently i am unable to check the pressure because I lack the gauge. trying to get a hold of a friend to borrow his. i did push the needle valve and am convinced that it is a pressure issue. ill have to wait and see for sure tho..

as for the brand of fuel pump i am not sure but i did get it at napa.

initailly i could rev it up but after a few minutes everytime i hit the gas the rpms went down when off the gas it idled fine.. but died after running a few minutes.

thanks everyone for your help and suggestions I really didnt want to start replacing things that dont need replaced I have a huge habit of that.

Therein lies your problem, I'm not a big fan of reman junk from auto parts dealers for such important stuff. Money is really tight for me, but I'm saving the money to get a new pump for my 99 Yukon from the dealer. Actually, I recently heard of a website that sells factory stuff at wholesale prices, I'll try and find the link...

As for the pump, the fuel pump on our 98 Suburban quit and we replaced it with a NAPA pump and a year later it did the same thing, ran like crap. We figured out that it was the pump, pulled it out and noticed that the blades were worn, as if the gas were eating them. Put in a factory pump and it ran like a charm until the thing got totaled.

I'm not a mechanic, yet, so I may be wrong...

there is lots of places to get acdelco cheaper than the dealer. as for aftermarket stuff, it usually seems to be hit or miss.

ok i had it running today couldnt check fuel pressure cause i dont have the tool but everyone suggest that the problem lies there and so do I.

ran for about 2 minutes went up the road turned around and everytime i gave it gas it wanted to die hehe.

The book doesnt give me a good enough location of where the regulator is someone mentioned under the plenum and not sure the meaning of this.

under the plenum.. is that where the two lines connect to the intake manifold and are held on by two nuts? (behind the tbi)

I followed the lines and couldnt find it elswhere must be underneath?

Ive heard that its near the distributor somewhere.

Figure I would try with the lowest priced part first since the fuel pump is so expensive.

Could also be that there is a leak in the intake somewhere downwind of the MAF, as that would cause it to run like crap.

it would have to be a real bad leak...and most PCMs have speed density programmed in them if the MAF were to go bad, so it will still run, just like crap.

Check your trouble codes before you do anything. Just because the CEL is not on all the time does not mean there are not trouble codes stored in the menory. OBD2 stores all trouble codes Hard, soft, and pending.
