My old 80 K10 had 2.73's (350, 4spd, 205).

I have found one of those in an '86 K10 burb.
My uncle had an '85 K10 with a 305/700r4 which had them. He put a big block in it and got better mileage!

I very nearly bought an 84 C10 that had a factory 2.73 rear end, Though they didn't slow it down at all, it would haul! (At least compared to my Blazer anyway)
I mentioned this in another thread already.

(The guy selling the truck didn't know this, I only told him after I looked at the RPO codes, and then pulled the diff cover just to be certain)

Dads 87 C10 had 305/350C/2:73. Sucked on anything but flat land. No passing power at all.

Ever since I put a 2:73 diff under my '81 G-10 van,I have been tempted to put a SM465 in it too--it needs a"granny low" for better take offs!--especially on hills...but the wide gap between second gear and third would really suck..
It would also be near impossible to locate all the clutch pedals and linkages since they only had manual transmissions in that era for about 3 years...
A 700R4 would be nice with the lower first gear, but you wont need overdrive, its already lugging on the highway at 60+ mph going uphill!..
I wish now I had gone for a 3:42 ratio diff I could have snagged instead..too late now.not changing it again...

2.56? That's nuts. You could go for land speed records with that gear set, and a TON of horsepower.

I posted in another thread how my '80 El-Camino had a 2:56 posi and a TH350,with a 267 V8 for a power train...take offs were sluggish, you could barely spin the tires on sand, and on ice the thing loved to go sideways instead of forward with no throttle!..
It would bury the 85 mph speedometer in second gear, third at 70+ mph made it lug and spark knock on steep grades..

My older brother had a '73 Impala with 2:56's and a Th400 ,454--that thing would smoulder the tires endlessly...you need big block torque to run highway gears--car also did fairly well for mpg--no worse than a 350 would have been..

Yeah! Imagine cruising across Texas at 90 at 1800 rpm...:D

I have a love hate relationship with the 2.73s in my c10. Its the best driving old truck Ive ever been in on the highway, smooth and quiet, 85 mph at 3000 rpm. But when it comes to stomping the pedal leaving a stoplight and with 300hp I only get a small squeal from the rubber, I am irritated. So I am swapping in 3.73s and a posi. :burnout:

The bad part of that is the RPM's on the highway.
Which is why I have a 700R4. ... and the 3:73's.
I like the gear splits of the TH350 better, but I was able to attempt following a Viper to Moab at over 90 mph with this combo.... I chickened out when I hit 95 in the daylight.....

Nothing like neutering a truck for 2% MPG improvement. With 2.73 and a decent-sized tire, run 2LO in town, then shift to 2HI for the highway. Who needs OD? Or get one of those gear vendors OD units and install it backwards. Somebody should bring in 2-speed rear ends for light trucks instead of going to 6-7-8 speed automatics, eh?

GV makes under drive units also,..
