Anyone know why #2 Fuel Oil couldnt be used in an emergency? Any long term down sides?

Ive read that FO is more refined, I would think that would be better, but cant really find much about running it as a blend or 100%.

The reason I ask is because a friend has a diesel generator and wants to run it this winter for extend periods of time in case the power goes out, and I was wondering about the possible applications for a 6.2 in an 'emergency'.

Home heating oil is dyed red and will get you fined if your tank is ever checked . Otherwise home heating oil and off-road diesel (also dyed red) seem to be the same stuff.

As long as it's clean, a diesel can and will burn almost any oil. I ran my 94 Cummins on 75 to 90 percent used and filtered automatic transmission fluid for over a year, and I still burn that mix in both my tractor and lawn mower with no problem in the summer months.

I guess it should be filtered to make sure its clean.

The only thing I know about FO is when I was a wee little kid and we lived in a trailer, the furnace ran off of it, we had a big 250 gal (I think) tank and one night someone climbed on the tank to siphon it. The tank was right outside our bedroom window.

Actually fuel oil is not the same as heating oil.
Fuel oil comes like grease, you need to warm it up to liquify and then use it.
It has much more enegy than heating oil.
Diesel is even less energy than heating oil plus now much less sulfur.
You can use heating oil but as mentionned, it's dyed red and you couls get in trouble now, but if it's when SHTF then yeah you can do it.
We were stationned next a tile factory that had ovens running on fuel oil, they had to run 24h a day because if they shut them down and they cool off, they need to start a small diesel powered oven to warm up the fuel oil so it flows and then starts the big ovens.

Now about the price of heating oil, it's little cheaper because you don't pay the road tax.
Which is why you get a ticket if caught running it on road.

Thanks Ice for the clarification, I love to learn new things! From what Ive been able to find so far, ORD and fuel oil are about the same price, so from a practical standpoint it looks like too much trouble to get the fuel oil. But as you said, on a SHTF situation, dump what you can.

i dont know where your located but im in NEPA (Scranton) and my dad just bought fuel oil for his furnace and it was $2.95 a gallon

I have seen what the sock filter on our 250 gallon oil tank looks like after a year,I dont think I'd want that tar looking gunk in my injectors..maybe we are getting low grade heating oil because my elderly mother gets it on a fuel assistance program for free,they must save the bottom of the barrel for the "low income" people maybe??..

I have used some heating oil in a pinch one winter when we had a 2 foot blizzard and I feared my truck would stall out on a hill if I tried making it to the nearest diesel fuel pump,it was so low..now I regret doing so,after reading the dye can stay in the tank for some time long after the fuel was used up..but I've never seen any diesel trucks under a 1 ton get pulled over and fuel tested here either...
