I appreciate your help with the engine decisions. I just have two more questions. 1) Does my stock engine in my '78 have two or four bolt mains (optional 350 engine) - I am asking rather than pulling the pan and looking. 2) Since I represent one of the local GM dealers, I can get the crate engine at cost + 10%. I was told about $2,100 for the 330 hp and $3,600.00 for the 370 hp. Are these good prices or are there better deals out there like the NAPA 383 I saw some people talking about in another post? If my stock motor is a 4 bolt, could I do better by having it rebuilt and built up a little? Thanks again for your input, I am really close to moving on the engine thing but I do not want to regret my choice or feel like to spent too much on this thing.

I believe that the last 3 numbers on the block casting should be 010 for a four bolt main. The numbers will be on the bell housing on the same side as cyclinders 2,4,6, and 8. Check with the a machine shop to confirm this.

heck if you get them at cost plus 10% I'd get the GM 383 I was talking about. The Napa one is about 2grand too from what mudd'n has said. It's probably a 2 bolt main, but I really doubt you need to worry about it... 2 bolts are good up to 600 hp no prob.

That doesn't really sound like super crazy deals on the crate motors. I think the 330 horse one is only around $2200 retail. The new GM Parts 383 looks like the perfect setup for a lot of K5's. Check prices at http://www.paceparts.com on the GM crate motors. They usually have close to the best prices available. You can't tell if your motor is 4 bolt from the casting number. The only way to tell for sure is to pull the pan and look. Being a truck motor in your year range, it is most likely a 4 bolt main block. I have heard a few people say that they cancelled the GM crate 383 (never made any, and are not going to).

The Napa 383 (actually a fourstar motor-SWEET!) is a 4 bolt. Very good deal! The GM motors don't sound like that great of a deal. I've seen motors in mags that same price with the same hp range and they had pretty chrome on them-ooo!

The GM crate motors cost more because they are made with all brand spanking new parts. They aren't rebuilt engines.

It's a great day to be alive...

Yes Gm motor are brand new and usually have a better warranty... plus considering I get 20% off it make that 383 come in at about 2400

, Although after the lift and stuff I'll be way too brokle for even that

. Napa's motor sounds pretty good too... Speedo-motive sells a short block 383 for $1200 as well. Basically you just need to make sure what you're buying is geared low enough in the rpm range.

3970010 blocks can be 2 or 4 bolt main. I have one in my 73 p-up that is 2 bolt and it replaced one that was 4 bolt.

Another way to find out if you have a 4 bolt is to pull the timing cover and on the front. There will be either
a 010 or 020 stamped on the front. If you have this block don't sell it. I think this is a bowtie block and is
quite valuable.
