i have had my old orange HF 20 ton shop press for over 10 years and she works good for me .

i have upgraded the arbor plates to SWAG OFFROAD units over the exploding cast units .
also added a 20 ton finger press break kit from SWAG the HD version and she works real good .
next was the old ball valve handle mod for the pressure release . good upgrade for about any jack .

then today i had a coupon for a 20ton air over hydro bottle jack at the local HF store . took it from 119.99 down to 89.99 . figure time for a good upgrade . the new jack is around 3/4" taller so stuff will need to be tweeked from old setups no big deal tho . took off the 2 springs and plate since its on a press . also ditched the air handle trigger hold latch .

did a few test runs and she seems to pump just fine . but i know i like my drink when i drink but this unit will drink your air compressor under the table at any shop party . i have a BIG air system here ( build thread on that ) and she can do 1.75 oil filters flat before the compressor comes on again . . . . she is a air drinker . now my STARK brand 8ton long reach air over ram on my engine hoist is a lot more lax in her air drinking needs . oh well not like i use it every day .

Man that's cool! I have wanted a air/hydraulic press for years. Now that my shop is being built I'll finally have room for one.

and no i didnt buy this for just crushing old burnt oil filters . but a side bonus is now a 5 gal bucket of them fits in just over 1gal of bucket size . less storage space needed until scrap run now .

Why burn them first? Crushing them spits out oil pretty quickly....

here is my other goodys for the press .

20 ton HD finger break kit : https://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-20-TON-Finger-Brake-Heavy-Duty-DIY-Builder-Kit_p_86.html

HD arbor plate kit : https://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-Machined-Arbor-Press-Plates-Pair_p_7.html

harbor freight 20 ton press kit newer version : https://www.harborfreight.com/20-ton-shop-press-32879.html?_br_psugg_q=shop+press

then a pile of old bearing races / chunks of solid stock / thick wall square tube chunks / other stuff for pressing needs .

then solid plate the bottom of the unit and put on 2 fixed and 2 swivel wheels to make it portable and hold my stuff o the now solid floor platform .

used one for YEARS and even had to tear it apart one day and put in a new seal kit we used it so much .

i get maybe 12-15 oil filters a year so i dont need that big boy . it was fun tho telling the cheep filters from the good by how long it took to go BOOM :eek1:
We used to take new filters and crush a smaller one on top. The indentation on a smaller one on top and made a perfect ashtray.
And we may or may not have used it in other ways as well...:D

I didn't even know filter crushing was a thing. :what:

Well my dad owned a oil change shop when I was growing up. Quicky lube.
So we would do on avg 60-65 oil changes a day. A super busy day would be around 80.
All those filters take up place in the dumpster. Crushing them forces the oil out and make them more environmental friendly and takes up less space in the dumpster.

And then it's fun to crush other shit in there to. We would crush a bunch on top of each other. To build a filter tower, make oil filter Ash trays to sell. Crush soda pops.
Crush peoples lunches that pissed you off. Etc,etc

yep i just took a 5 gal bucket with another 2gal extension on top worth of oil filters i burnt . now its just 1.5 gal worth .

and if you burn used oil i could get 5 gal of oil fairly quickly doing oil changes .

I put the oil filters off my vehicles in the wood stove after draining them at each oil change...throws great heat for about 10+ minutes and there is only the steel can and a spring left inside to rattle once its all burnt..
The town landfill refused to take them until I put some burnt ones in the metal pile, the employee picked one up and shook it and said :
"well,as long as there's no oil left in it,I guess it IS all metal and OK to put here"..

My friend bought a HF 20 ton press a few years ago,in hopes of being able to press new FWD wheel bearings on himself--very few places around here to get that done any more, and the few that will say "pick it up tomorrow"..he cant tie up a vehicle on his lift 2 days..
The press works good, but the metal plates it came with suck,he needs to get some custom made ones that will fit around hubs better ..they are very difficult to hold still while pressing the bearings on..
