$200 K5 (454 K5 now) *too much junk in the trunk

Can my Detroit in the rear be junk after 5000 miles?

AAM 10.5 rear axle, 4.10 gear and a Detroit. It used to never unlock. It would just chirp the tires like a spool. Went to Moab, it worked fine. After getting back I noticed that it would actually ratchet in a parking lot, not just chirp. Figured it finally broke in. The standard bang or two in a parking lot has changed to lots of bangs on any corner, not just the tight ones. Coming home today it is clicking like crazy, all messed up. About to pull the cover.
Any thoughts?
This thing should be practically indestructible. I only ran Hells, Tunnel arch and Schafer.

Blew all the inner teeth off of the driver side bevel gear. Gears are fine. Axle shafts are fine.
I'm pretty confused here.

Here is the listing from when I bought it. Amazon $627 now. Was only $500.
Here is the Yukon Grizzly $405. Are they the same thing? (operation wise)

Its going to be hard to not try Yukon after being let down like this. WTF Eaton?

That's crappy for sure!
I would be thinking the same way as you in trying something different.
I would bet that Eaton would fall back on their disclaimer of not using oversized tires. At least I believe that I remember reading that years ago in their listings.
It's BS in my eyes, just trying to ride on previous reputation and build things cheaper.

Its been a bunch of time but not a bunch of miles as many of our projects go. Downtime for building and upgrades makes parts seem old that are barely used. No chance of a warranty on my "old" locker.

As I check around the Grizzly is supposed to be a little stronger than the Detroit. They operate the same with a little difference in tooth design. I like Detroits and have had them before. This one is a little puzzling. From the sounds I think it got a little damaged and has been ripping teeth off around town this week until complete failure. Almost all the teeth were inside the carrier still, there was very little metal on the magnet. Couldn't have been failing for very long.

Saw you running down Reynolds the other day; exhaust sounded good. If you need any of the tools or a hand with fixing the 14 bolt let me know!

That is so strange, did it look like a legit Detroit or was it a knockoff?

I had the same 14BFF Detroit in my truck since 2003 without a problem, and I beat on it with a big block, but not in the rocks I'll admit. Usually sand or dirt.

It seems like you got one with a bad heat treat or something.

That's a bummer.

I think it was a real Detroit. Proper box, manual etc. Bad luck I guess.

Put a Grizzly locker in the 14 bolt last night. It's surprisingly smooth for an automatic locker. No clunking or chirping the tires but it spins both tires on dirt without hesitation. Since it came with no instructions at all that means you can't install it wrong, right?
