Since I know everyone on here is a Chevy guy in some way, I'm looking for reviews on 2000-2005 Silverado or Sierra half tons. I'm going to be in the market soon for one, and from what I am finding, a decent, 100k truck can be had for around 8k. I'm looking for 4x4, and that's really the only set thing. Basically, what is the way to go with these trucks? I know that the LS motors are great, and that for the most part they are good trucks, but is there anything that I need to look out for before I seal the deal on one? Any preferred years or anything like that?

ummm... well I have a 2005 chevy silverado and my buddy have a 2001 GMC 1500 same truck)

We both have done our rear axles prior to 100k miles.. we both have had to the knock sensors 3 times...(not a hard job but a pain to keep doing over)

He has done his transmission once already

Watch out for the heads on some models (yes they are LS style motors, but there iron/ steel blocks not aluminum) the heads are aluminum and if they are made by castech, then check for cracks at the oil return bosses (a pain to check but its easier then having to pay for new heads) Mine are cracked and they can eat coolant and oil fast)

rear disc brakes wear out and rot/ rust fast...
GM still used there pitman arm/ idler combination which wear out quickly even in stock height form... They have bolt in wheel bearings that can wear with stock tires let alone a bigger tire.

I suggest one with a lever shift transfercase, cause electronics fail...

Both of us had to do transfercase work because they make noise and fail.. not to mention the special fluid is like $10 a quart.

after 125k miles i finally only have an airbag light on...

also ive done idler pulleys, tensioner pulleys, belts, battery, intake gaskets, light bulbs many times and shocks a couple times..

other wise i like them

Just recently got a 04 ext cab silverado with 130k. My dad has a 99 with 260k and just had the transmission rebuilt in it. Other than that its completely factory

I love it! My tacoma was only getting avg of 12 mpg with 285s on it so I went back to 265s and was getting 15 easing around town. The chevy gets 16 with a programmer and 33s and can pull anything I will ever want to. So more room + better fuel mileage = no brainer for me

In the 03-05 trucks ( also 06-07 classic but you didn't mention those years)

The instrument cluster likes to screw up. About 450 to replace and reprogram

Cool! Thanks man, sounds good. Does it have a 5.3?

Hmmm good to know... thanks.

It does have the 5.3. The hoods are thicker (as in look like hd trucks from front)and grilles slightly different on 05-07s.
My mom has a 02 tahoe with the 5.3 flex fuel engine and less miles than mine and my dads 5.3 but hers has given us problems with engine only difference is she flex fuel engine

I would let you get mine but you could buy a brand new one probably cheaper than coming way down here to get this one! Haha

Are you looking for ext cab or 4 door? If ext cab make sure all 4 doors open. The 99 only opens on the passenger side and is completely aggravating trying to get something from the back seat when you're by yourself. I know of a 2000 that has the same 3 door setup. Idk what year that stopped though

Extended cab... i don't need a 4 door. Hey man, if the deal is right, I'm willing to travel! haha

I wanted a 4 door but with the "suicide" ext cab doors that was a good compromise. If you ever came down here to Gods country you'd never go back! :D

Yes it does. And the 99 does also but when it went out a mild shift kit was installed and its a beast when pulling our 30 ft camper compared to my truck and the tahoe

Hmmm ok. I put a 700R4 in my K5 a few years ago, and that was about 1k. I know its basically the same tranny, so I guess that shouldn't be too bad if something does go wrong. Hows the fit and finish in the interior?

I LOVE my 062500HD standard cab pick up. I just wish it was a crew cab as I miss my old CCI like te 6.0 motor it's got lots of power I cnsee whyit's a popular swap for damn sure

Rebuild total price was about $1200-1300 for parts labor and everything.

Theres different models. 99 is LT with heated leather and all. Mine is just the LS with manual seats but dash, headliner, everything else is the same between the 3

Corvette servo is one of the best mod for these trucks. . I had a 2003 silverado ext cab w the 4.8. Traded it in with 235,000 miles. Bought it at 50 k miles everythigs factory except blackbear tune, and vette servo. Ran great loved it.

Now I miss it but stepped up to duramax:D

Cool... so basically there decent trucks? That's the main thing I'm looking for. It's going to be my DD, nothing more. Might throw a leveling kit and some 33's on it, but that's it.
