I have a 2001 1500hd the rs exhaust manifold is broken in 2 places. This side has also had the cat replaced at least twice. Iam also getting an ignition ping on heavy acceleration. No engine codes and the drivers side manifold is fine and cat is original.

I was just wondering if for aome reason that side is running hot and also are the bolts going to come out the rear is already broke off flush with the manifold

Very well could be, but it’s hard to diagnose much in that condition. You will need a scanner to see what the computer needs

with the computer looking at both sides of the engine for air/fuel mix in exhaust the leaking manifold will suck air and there for create a faults lean reading and the engine will add more fuel that side and create more heat .

the broken bolts are easy to remove from the head via the weld a nut on trick . lots of pics / videos on the internet of this being done .

cracked manifolds were more common in early years of the ls i recall . get a new one and try to find a gm replacement over aftermarket like dorman . there going to crap in quality / life span these days . maybe even swap to a set of quality shorty headers that just replace the manifolds .

Broken studs and broke manifold are not uncommon. Until you get all the exhaust leaks fixed you are going to chase your tail on the lean codes and driveability issues.

If the last two studs broke near the firewall you are going to have a hell of a time extracting them due to lack of space. If you can't get at it, the head is going to have to come off to repair it.

I had the rear most manifold bolt break on both sides on my '03 2500HD. Should be very similar to the 1500HD, but I pulled the inner front fenders liners and had reasonable room to get to them. Driver's side was broke flush with the head and welded a nut on. The passenger side was sticking out of the head and was able to get it out with just vice grips. I know a long time Chevy dealer mechanic and he has lost track of how many of these he had done over the years. If broke off flush they just pull the head and send to a machine shop....keep in mind he can have the head pulled about as fast as the average person could pull the fender line and wheel the welder over to the truck. Usually they turn it around in less than a day.

only 2 i have ever had to give up on was a ford iron head 460 . even the machine shop said they were in there good . the other was a v6 dakota truck center port bolt . i gooped on some copper sealer rtv on the new gaskets and never had it come back . i use to see it drive all over in town and always quiet .
