My 2001 Silverado 25000 [gas] is fighting me. The power steering pump has been replaced, but the pulley is being a PITA. It need to go on the shaft about another 1/4" giver or take. I've been using the dpecited tool, but keep stripping out the bolts.

A} Keep throw bolts at it
or
B) Apply some heat & then option A
anBn

I’ve never stripped my pulley tool, even using the impact on it

Pull it apart, and check that’s it’s not bottoming out

Need to heat the pulley, ice the pump, then do it all at once.

This is how close it is or far away depending on how you look at it

Tool wise I rented a good one from the local auto parts store. To that end I worked on it on and off today & I don't think it budged :reddevil:. Also alternated between light heat and dry ice

I think I stripped out this same tool. I bought a slightly more expensive one and it has worked better.

Are you sure there isn't something back there? I've seen new pumps come with a bolt, nut and washer that's supposed to press the pulley on. Take it back off and inspect. If there is a nick/burr on the shaft or the pulley you can clean it up before starting over. If you have a bolt that's backed out behind the pulley you're just going to end up breaking or bending something.

quality tool, heat may damage seal.

this one is similar to the snap on I have used for 30 years

I've got the same Snap-on install tool and it has served me well.

I had to change the pump on my '00 6.0L several years ago and I remember the pulley removal and install being kind of a b!tch. The later models must be machined for a tighter press fit, compared to the 80's and 90's stuff.

Figured I’d close the loop on this one—never did get the pulley on. Ended up replacing the entire bracket that houses the alternator and power steering pump. Found a super clean bracket and pump and took a chance on a junkyard pump. Only regret? Not thinking of it sooner. :surepal::rolleyes::rolleyes2:

in case you are wondering, the offending pump/pulley is depicted herepump.jpg
