I have been looking for a late model 2500 4x4 6.0 Suburban for a while and finally found one and I am going to look at it this weekend.

Is there anything I need to check out in particular on this truck? It has 200K miles but is very clean looking. I hope the trans (I think a 4L80E? it has a temp gauge) and the 14 bolt rear are good for another 100K. From what I read the 6.0 is good to go too. I am looking for a reliable tow rig here. I don't think the current owner has any maintenace records so I don't know about the basic high mileage stuff like fuel pump, water pump, etc. The front end is suppose to be tight and in good shape.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could check the front wheel hubs to be sure they aren't loose (jack it up and see if it wiggles around). I put in a fuel pump around 60k so for some reason, they don't last long.

Mileage, you will probably get 11-12 around town, 14-15 on highway. I get about 1 mpg less than that with the 8.1L. If you do find an 8.1L try it out. Pretty fun rig!

Hate to say it, but 200k is a lot for wear items on those trucks.

Unless the front end has had work, it won't be very tight.

And, the 4l80e is probably on borrowed time as far as needing a rebuild. If its been rebuilt at some time, then i retract my statement.

Check it out well. It could be in 100k mile shape, or 300k mile shape....

Thanks for the replies guys. I went back and read my earlier post on newer trucks and I have been reading about the transfer case pump rub problems. Looks like I am just about garunteed to have transfer case that is damaged and needs the fix kit. That is not promising.

I am starting to rethink the Suburban but for what I am willing to spend I don't know if I can do much better. The asking price on this one is $6K.

If I have to drop the transfer case and possibly replace the back half of the case plus the kit and the 4L80E needs a rebuild I might be in another $2K.

I was thinking about doing the waterpump and maybe the fuel pump right off due to the high miles. That might be $300 to $500 depending on brand of parts.

I figured the front end would need some parts myself. Is the front end work a huge pain? The pitman arm and idler arm looks like another $150.

Anybody got any better ideas on a decent tow rig? :dunno:

What is the transfer case rub thing? I've not heard of it.

My 04' has 97k on it so much younger than the one you are looking at. I've replaced the front hubs which weren't too bad but have not done much else. Again, though, mine is 100k less miles. I'd definitley go through it in detail.....

Due to gas prices/consumption, I'd probably look at a diesel rig. Maybe a 4 door pickup or something. Gas does go quickly in the suburban and blazer......
