2003 tahoe, update: more bad things

Update: I took it to a shop. It doesn't fit in my garage and it's too cold to do it outside. They pulled the intake and something fell into the head, which made a whole lot of noise when it was reassembled and started. This resulted in a shattered piston, a beat up head and a decent sized scratch in the cylinder wall.

They want to hone it, replace the piston. Have the aluminum head welded and milled and to be done with it in general.
:haha:

Sounds like they want to give you a half ass repair for their full ass screw up!

Sorry NO! should be your answer. To many other components could be damaged that we don't even know of yet. I paid for professional shop repair and you made a big mistake, now find a new motor to replace your mistake. We know how this will end in small claims court!

It looks like it may be going that route.

that last pic is why I always keep track of my tools .

I once spent 20 min and found a 3 doller socket in the frame rail of a vehicle I had droped .

the mechanic should be paying the shop to replace the motor as it was his tools / his job / his work / his sloppy messy work ethics .

I'm curious what that torx bit was used for? If It is a t25 that's for the air filter... Why would it be up on the cowl to fall in? Put your tools away. :doah:

they didn't try and hide the fact the mech lost his tool in the engine :doah:

at least this part was honest.

say it again NEW OR GOOD USED ENGINE

I don't get why a torx would be out either, I just did the gaskets on my manifold and didn't use a torx once. Not even the airbox has a torx on my 2002.

A t20 fits the fuel rail.

Spoke to him this morning and he doesn't want to replace the block. Says his insurance won't cover it and he won't pay for one.

The rails should not have been removed for that job.

Sounds like you have fight on your hands and I'm not sure if I would want them working on my rig after all this.

Time to lawyer up. Don't let him screw you on this. He messed up, he fixes it. End of story.

x1 million times.

job like that in a decent shop would just be a payout and never turn it in to insurance . buy the stuff and install it and eat it in the end . makes the customer happy and saves face and no rise in insurance premiums.

He called me later today and said he found a 160k mile motor for $450. I. Pay for the motor he pays labor to put it in. That's probably the best deal I'll get out of him.

I'd offer to pay the total of what the original intake manifold gasket job would have cost. Total! No more! If the engine is installed and there are no issues with new engine and at least a 30 day guarantee!

That is as fair as it gets to fix his screw up. There's no reason to pay anymore. There's no reason to trust any work he does will be worth it without the guarantee on new engine.

If not, I'd be spending a couple hundred bucks at an attorney to start with a letter offering the same, then file a court case.

You are in the drivers seat here, he screwed up, not you!

he still screwing you .

was running driving vehicle when droped off.

now its junk .

he needs to bring it back to the original running condition or better as that's what it was there for .

Screw that crap!!! No way in hell I'd ever take that deal. A $450 2003 engine? Really? Those engines sell for well over $1500 anywhere else. It has 160k on it!!!

He wrecked your engine, he will put a NEW long block into your truck for FREE or you sue. Simple as that. Do not let this hoser push you around. You took your truck in for repair work and he destroyed your engine. In no way should you be paying for that.

Hell, if money is the issue I'll help you pay for a good lawyer to take that idiot to court and teach him that it costs more to screw around with someone than to make it right from the start!

This shop will be buying you one of these

Fitting all your old accessories and installing the engine at no cost to you. Anything less and you got hosed very hard. This is a clear cut case and you have absolutely no reason to feel bad about pushing for this. It's his loss for not being more careful or having adequate insurance coverage for his buisness. You have no reason to see him as a charity case. The only thing I would even consider spending more money on would be a new GM factory original water pump, FPR and a set of injectors. He does not have to replace those parts but it would be worth doing to make sure your new engine is all new.

If you are unsure that he will perform the work to your expected quality becuase he is unhappy you are forcing him to do it right, then you have every right to take your vehicle back, drop it off at another shop and include the engine and install bill in your suit against him. He will pay the tow bill and for anything that is missing or damaged when the other shop recieves the truck.

I agree with Russell and take back my wimpy offer... :doah:

But Russell, we don't know anything about this shop? We know you are correct! Now is he on the verge of bankruptcy and closing the shop anyways? His work is not that great... how is his reputation? How long has he been open? He's surely not treating this customer properly, so how many others...

He's not real brite either. Obviously he lost a tool in a motor that caused it fatal damage. Then he let the customer take pictures of his mistakes? He does not know he will loose this case in court?

time to teach him a lesson

Time to take it to the dealership. A real shop would apologize and replace the motor and apologize some more. This happened in my shop several years ago to a 250k vortec 350. A broken piece of lock washer (NO idea where it came from) found its way into a cylinder. When the truck left it had a new gm crate 350, and the customer was only out the time he was missing his truck.
