CA 2003 Workhorse p42

Not really posting this for sale as much as finding info on it.
I know some here worked with workhorse and might know the answer.

The listing says it has a 5 cylinder turbo diesel and the pictures show a straight inline engine.
All the info online says they only came with the gm 6.5 turbo.
I remember you guys saying FedEx or UPS had special options for engines.
Any idea if this was a legit truck or someone else put that in and what engine could it be?

This one actually has a 3.9L Cummins 4 cylinder, which had a few names; ISB4 or 4BE, which was a modern version of the old 4BT. Its basically ISB6 with 2 cylinders lopped off. Its certainly not a 5 banger. We built several hundred 3.9L Cummins rigs for Frito-Lay and a handful for DHL (like 25) and a few for onsie twosie customers between 2003 and 2005, as Cummins did not certify that engine for the big diesel emissions change in 2006 with the introduction of DPFs. We also offered the tried and true 6.5L diesel (made by GEP/AM General since 1999) along side of the Cummins. The Cummins option was a major upcharge due to the engine cost and Allison 2200 it came with were as the 6.5L was barely a $1000 upcharge over a small block gas. After 2005 we began using the International 4.5L V6 diesel, which was a 100% piece of shit. That engine stuck around until Navistar ruined Workhorse and sold the plant and brand name in 2012. Yeah, I'm still bitter about that.

I actually have quite the story about these this particular batch of DHL trucks that I don’t have time to tell right now but it’s a great story and why customers should not handle vehicle distribution on their own, especially into the State of California. I probably still have the VIN list and pictures somewhere on a hard drive from when we built them.

I’ll post up the story when I get time. Its pretty funny. These pictures are of an actual DHL Cummins 3.9L that I acquired back then, which is part of the funny story with these particular DHL rigs. It would be crazy if this engine was the original one out of the truck in the CL ad :haha:

So is it worth the $2k with possibly a bad turbo or a bad trans, per the seller?
Apparently only 40k miles on it.
I know I can't get it registered in CA but I have a friend in Nevada that can get it registered.
Would the transmission be an Allison then?

I would imagine a 3.9L Cummins core alone is worth more than $2000 so, yes….

Like I said above, we used Allison 2000s behind the 4BE
