i am pretty much a Chevy guy and always have been, but I inherited this when my dad passed away a few years ago,was going to sell it but the wife convinced m to hang on to it,well we took on a short road trip here recently, basically because there were 6 of us all together ,and we only wanted to take one vehicle, well all in all I was very impressed with the comfort level for everyone in the truck, while traveling at consistent hi speed , basically up around 80-85,and touched a 100 several times,my sister in law,who is a very nervous person never did pick up on the speed we were traveling, and it average 12.1 mpg,I like this truck, fast stable ,quiet and roomy

I've seen quite a few of the Triton V-10's and a few of Fords V8's have the spark plugs pop out of the heads--seems they only put a few threads worth of meat in the boss where they screw in--and its not always possible to heli-coil them..

The local Ford dealer has a guy with a mobile van that specializes in putting special threaded inserts in the head using a process that expands them in place kind of like a pop rivet--the only method that seems to work permanently on this problem, other than head replacement..he gets 500 bucks per cylinder,or he'll do all of them for 1500....()..

Other than that I have not heard any real horror stories about the V10's...several of my friends customers at his shop have them in F-350's and most have upwards of 200K on them, with no major issues..
A few had had the transmissions go out though..

I used to drive them quite a bit when I worked for Ford. Comfortable truck, and passes everything but the gas station.

They largely fixed the plug spitting issue with later variants. You can actually buy the repair kit for them at places like Advance Auto Parts, but it runs about 50-60 bucks--per cylinder.

The modular motors are pretty decent, I've heard some complain that the V-10s are a bit gutless despite their displacement and cylinder count, but opinions vary.

I kinda felt this thing was low on power as well, but seems to come alive at about 3000 rpm,but it is a very smooth running engine

I drove a 2004 F550 with a 14 ft service body for years. The V10 is indeed gutless and uses way more fuel than it should given it's output, but man, that thing was bulletproof. I bagged on it at high RPMs all the time and it kept on running like new. Last I heard it got pulled out of service in exchange for a diesel and went to auction with 135k miles in perfect working order.

That is good to hear, this one only has 42000 on it,probably going to keep it around,it is a great people hauler, the fuel economy is ok as far as I am concerned, since it is not a daily

Check to see if you have the funky Y pipe exhaust. I think it's a V10 thing. It's not so much a Y pipe as it is a T-bone pipe with a tiny neck. Cutting out that small section and properly merging them tends to help them breath.

Other than that, I've got a family member with a diesel model. I'm pretty sure it actually has a bazillion miles on it, yep, for sure.

Sometime you wonder what they're thinking...

If I bought a brand new truck today, it would not be a chevy. I would buy one of those Shelby super charged Raptors, with four doors.
