Folks, friend of mine has a 2005 Silverado LS crew cab 4x4 that he bought used last year. It has done him a pretty good job so far.
He is getting the "service four wheel drive" warning intermittently on the dash lately. From my reading, it seems the most common causes for that are the dash switch pack or the actuator. With the dash switches being the most likely and cheaper problem.
I will pop the switch out and test it when I get a chance.
But, right now, his main worry is the intermittent lack of inside lights when he opens a door at night. He lives about 3 hours away, and I only see him when we go fishing or during hunting season.
The local game department opened the deer season for four days over the Thanksgiving holidays, and he came over to stay in his camper, parked on my farm.
Baitfish1, myself, and this guy, ( I gotta come up with a name for him) went out to eat Friday night.
We took his truck.
As we were getting out at the restaurant, he commented that the lights were not coming on when we opened the doors.
I had not given it much thought up until then, because I seldom ride in his truck at night. I glanced at the door jamb, and saw that it had no pop out switch.
So, I sorta mumbled that the switch had to be in the latch. Took my finger and slid it into the slot where the door strike hits the latch.
Wiggled the latch arms slightly, and the inside lights came on.
He was stunned. Asked me what I did. I told him that the open door switches were part of the door latch, and they were either dirty, or out of adjustment.
I said that when we got a chance, I would see what it would take to fix them.

He is a little impulsive. I got an E-Mail from him today, saying he had gone on a GM parts site and gotten the part numbers for the four different latches.
I asked if he had priced them, because I had and they were not cheap.
He wrote back and said that it was almost $700 for all four. Although the place would give him a 15% discount for an order over $200.
I told him to leave the darn things alone until I could find out more. I have a friend who has several wrecked later model GM trucks, and I am going to see if I can pull the latch out of one and see how that switch works.

I have worked on a couple of foreign cars that used that system. On one, the switch was just a leaf that was easily bent back into adjustment, and the other was a small Cherry switch that I could buy from one of my electronic supply outfits for about$1.50. Held on by two screws.

I am going to try to find one this week, but I figured someone here was probably already familiar with this system and could tell me what I am going to find.
I think the $700 price tag has stopped my friend from doing anything until he hears from me again.

Of course, when I get one out, I will post what I find and add pics so someone else can benefit.

Sounds like they're just dirty. I worked at a ford dealer in 07-08, and alot of vehicles came in with the door ajar light on, when they were very securely latched. Ford had their own cleaner/lube to spray in there to correct it.

Ive got an 06 Chevy 1500, never noticed there wasn't the little dome light switch before. it's been pretty great for me. Hopefully your friends truck is for him too.

My 05 crew cab did that about once a year. Usually after a trip to the desert for a motorcycle race. Wind blowing sand. I just blew them out with compressed air. Sometimes they get over lubed then crusty with dirt. A little brake parts cleaner may be needed.
