ok A friend of mine lost the transmission in his 2006 GMC 1/2 4x4 ton pickup. needs to come out to be rebuilt. called some trans. shop $850.00 not bad we have to remove the trans and bring it to the shop the guy does not remove and install. not a big deal few hours on the floor. great I have R&R several. the only real question is on an 2006 does a person have to remove the torsion bars to get the trans out. I did a 98 suburban a few years ago and had to separate the trans and the transfer to get each out. is that still the case or will we have to remove the bars. if so how does one do that ?? or is it better to leave alone and separate..:dunno::dunno:

You will have to remove the exhaust Y pipe and transfer case, you will need to go in through the starter hole to remove the converter bolts. There is an extra bellhousing bolt at the very top of the bell not found on non LS transmissions. Do not try and unplug the manual lever position sensor, you will ruin it and possibly the harness, unbolt it from the side of the trans and slip it over the selector shaft leaving the wires connected. The cooler lines are held in with clips and push into the fittings on the case.

ok great did not know about the selector will remember that when we do the job. but do we have to undo the bars.

ok great . but you are say we still have to separate the trans and transfer correct. they don't come down together?

The center of the motor crossmember is removeable and the motor wont drop far enough to get to all the bolts until ya remove it.
