My 06 Silverado 1500, 5.3, 4l65e, 4x4, 145k miles, started shifting into second very softly the day before yesterday. Until then it had always been a very firm 1-2 shift, especially at low throttle. The fluid isn't perfectly clean, however it is not burned, does not smell burned, and there's no metal in it.

If I manually put the shift lever in "2" to start, and stab the throttle it will slip. I did this once. When driving very nicely it will still be a positive shift I can feel from 1-2, the same for putting it in "1" and letting it shift itself. But under normal driving conditions, I can still feel it, but it just slides into second.

All other gears work correctly, or at least seem to. OD works perfectly as far as I can tell, with no hunting in and out of gear, the TCC stays locked up perfectly. Could this just be a problem in the valve body? Or are the clutches for second toast? It seems weird to just happen, it does not seem to have gotten worse.

Would it be worth it to do a fluid and filter change, or is that just throwing money away at this point? I'm dreading this. I had nothing but problems with 700r4s, and I'm not going through that nightmare again. Nothing would last, rebuilds, used ones, the best one was one that a friend and I rebuilt when we were 19.

I don't have much experience with trannys but I do know that when it starts slipping it's probably going bad and will need to be rebuilt, or you might get lucky and be able to drive it for awhile, if none of the other clutch packs start slipping. When my th350 started going bad it would slip in 3rd gear and reverse, but 1 and 2 were fine.

If I remember correctly second gear is achieved by a band. Could be that band is worn but with it just going all of a sudden I'm wondering if it's not a seal broke, possibly on the servo
