I saw something a couple years ago where they said GM was toying withthe idea of making a 2 door Tahoe with a removable top. Was going to be called the K5. Looked badass IMO. I think it was at SEMA but I'm not sure.

yeah, the new k5 concept was pretty cool. they were talking about insane power numbers, too, but it would probably get neutered if it ever went into production.
but, even if they made it, we all know what the problem would be....IFS. i know, i know, better onroad ride, but come on.
even scarier, what if they used an AWD system like the older silverado ss, instead of a real offroad capable 4x4 setup? that's just wrong!

if you look through the windshield, you can see the back door on the other side still. It does look badass though.

i like it but they gotta make it have the removable top ! just imagine 8" lift sas on 38's that be a killer ride

this is a link to the concept i saw a long time ago. it looks more like an amigo than a k5, though. i don't like the sloping b-pillars.

The full removeable tops are sweet but I think they got ditched mostly because they offer practically no rollover protection
That is pretty sweet.
As far as the rollover protection comment, I get a kick out of my buddy. Gives me sh*t about the kids riding in the back of mine without the top on. They are in their car seats which are belted in tight with the lap belts. I tell him they are safer in there than in any 4 seater convertible with no top at all.

Reading this thread got me thinking... It would be cool to find a used late-model short bed with a completely worn-out drivetrain and do the Trazer thing...in reverse. It would be quite a project, but someone with good welding skills could pull it off. Chop the front off the bed, and the back off the cab. Weld together, brace, etc. You'd end up with a new-style "Blazer" tub. Also bend some 2"x4" square tubing to form the factory roll bar in a K5, and give you a place to bolt on the fiberglass top. The top would need to be a 'stockish' camper shell, again with the front lopped off and some custom glasswork done to create a mounting surface.bownut said:

Edit: This idea was inspired by the idea of a new K5 as well as the Jeep "Brute" made by AEV. They chop a Wrangler body off behind the front seats and weld in new body parts to make it into a pickup cab. Why can't someone do it in reverse??? And sell a kit???

If I did, I'd probably call on you to photochop a late model for reference. It would be damn cool though...Solid axle up front and all that, modern Vortec engine through a new tranny (if desired). The rear window wouldn't be a problem since camper shells already have those. Having the modern dash that my girlfriend's '06 Tahoe has would be awesome.
Truly bitchin' would be a full 'vert late-model Silverado/K5 Blazer. That would be SEMA material.

The cars of today can literally be flipped at high speeds with the tops off and the pillars for the front windshield can support the weight of the car so you don't get crushed... Although I've never seen a flipped blazer with the top off I somehow doubt that it'd be able to support its own weight...instead just crushing everything.
