Often when I start my 2008 Duramax, the volt gauge registers a little about 12V and just sits there. Sometimes it will slowly increase to 14+V yet other times it will not increase until I drive it for up to a couple miles. Any ideas?

Mine is a 02 But it has always done that. Even after I replaced the alternator last year. Never really worried about it.

My Son just bought a 01 it takes even longer to be "normal" but it gets there and seems fine. :dunno:

Just read your post again...yeah mine takes about 45 seconds, kids about a minute.

I bet Russell would have some insight on it!??

FWIW I replaced my alternator and both batteries on my 04' about a year ago. The volt meter never showed signs like you describe before or after the change. Its always shot straight to 14v everytime.

My 07 starts low around 11-12 and after about 30 seconds goes to 14

That's the intake heater and glow plugs operating that draw your voltage down so hard. Normal for all duramax engines. My Tahoe, dad's 03, my old 2012 and my new 14 all do this.

Same on mine. Always has been like that. I lent out my truck to my brother so he could haul his tractor. He called me saying the voltage was low and the oil pressure was pegged. I responded to welcome to the diesel world. :thumb:

That explains why mine never did it cause I took my heater out. Not really needed here in Texas.

Thanks for all the responses guys! It is good to know that this is "normal".
