2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV

What happens if you leave the engine alone, with the correct water pump for it, etc., just not having the cam phasers plugged in?

What about going the other way and getting a VVT PCM?

Just throwing this out there, but does the valvetrain from the old engine swap in? Maybe time to inspect those parts?

The belt location is probably different.
Although I think there is a water pump for the shorter accessory drive and VVT

Yep, the whole front cover of the L96 and other VVT motors has a bulge that prodtrudes forwards to accommodate the hydraulic advance/retard cam phaser. The water pump sticks out further forward to clear this bump.

Non VVT motors, I've learned, have a flat front cover and a water pump and accessory belt path that sit a couple inches closer to the front of the engine.

I wouldn't mind the VVT, it'd just be a matter of tuning with HP tuners, but the water pump and accessories of my car dictate otherwise.

So let's look at my best options:

Need a VVT delete kit: $200

Need a non-VVT cam
-Aftermarket cam is $400
-Stock LS3 cam is $200

Need 7.400" long pushrods
-Stock L96 uses 7.385" pushrods because of baby cam, so I wouldn't use them. Could rob these off my L77 if in good condition for $0
-Aftermarket 7.400 pushrods are $100

Bigger cam usually requires stiffer valve springs, but I'm wondering if I can keep my stock L96 springs if I use a stock LS3 cam?
-Stock L96 valve springs are $0
-Could rob these off my L77 if in good condition for $0
-Aftermarket springs are $150

Checkout a water pump for a camaro with a Gen 4 LS3.
Should be the shorter accessory drive, but VVT compatible

I checked, it's not compatible with my accessories.

According to this site https://www.ictbillet.com/pages/auto-parts/ls-water-pump-swap-guide the only VVT compatible water pumps are for trucks and LS3, both of which stick out further to accommodate the VVT bulge.

Another solution I'm researching is swapping to LS3 accessory brackets and belt. Then I could put an LS3 water pump on and keep the VVT. No cam swap necessary.

I'll report back with my findings.

Ok, I'm done researching brackets. Truck L96 and manual, non-VVT LS3 Camaros use the same water pump and accessory brackets. Not finding any clear sets out there, nor confirmation that it would even work anyway. Only one used set on ebay that comes with accessories and idk if they'll work for $650.

So that leaves me at a cam swap. I'm looking for reliability, longevity, and low prices.
-Stock LS3 cam
-LS3/LS6 stock style valve springs
-7.400" pushrods at stock 5/16 diameter, but thicker 0.080" walls
-VVT delete kit with timing chain cover, camshaft sensor adapter, timing gear, timing chain dampener, camshaft bolt, crankshaft bolt

Am I missing anything? I think that will be a good way to meet my goal of daily reliability.

It's my understanding that the stock L96 lifters can stay put. I'd prefer to keep the heads on and lifters intact if at all possible. Trying to keep costs low

I am not familiar with them. I was just curious. I just recently was in a direct injected 5.3L and they have half the lifters as the afm ones and half are normal. Like these.

Ah, yeah those are what my Caprice had from the factory. AFM/DOD lifters are ticking time bombs, but VVT is pretty reliable. Unfortunately I can't run vvt with my water pump and accessory brackets

Oh I gotcha different animals.

See if @folkenheath cab get you a better deal?

I appreciate the heads up, I'm not the best option for stock parts, but I'll give it a shot.

I can't get the stock cam for that price. Could get you an LS9 cam for around $280. Or a mild Howards cam for ~$380, pick up some ponies.

I can get you those for that price, I can't beat it.
For mild springs I usually get the GMPP ones that are good for a little more lift than the BTR, those are $100.

I don't sell ZZP, cheapest 7.400 pushrods I sell are Cam Motion or BTR for ~$120

VVT delete kit

I can piece that together with the GM cover and hardware, etc.
Cost would be similar with the GM chain damper, could of saved some coin if the Cloyes chain damper was in stock.

Everything I mentioned is in stock.
