I have a 13 beetle. I love it.

The only thing I have done to it so far is took off hill assist in the computer. It's so much nicer to drive.

This isn't the first time I've seen someone on here mention they disabled the hill assist. Why do people hate it so much? I have a '13 GTI and absolutely love it. It just takes a little getting used to but not having to do the 3 foot boogie on hills is not only convenient, but it helps save your clutch too.

I have driven standards for way to long to get used to it. I thought I would, but after 3 months of stalling I couldn't deal anymore. I habitually start in 2nd on downhills and I would always stall. It's also extremely annoying when on a hill in stop and go traffic.

My GF just picked up a 2014 TDI Passat and loves it.

What's the deal with this?

My friend has a vagcom. He works on audis. I couldn't have done it without his help. He checked into some vw/audi forums to figure out which things to click in the menus.

Last year we traded in our super duty for a 2011 Jetta TDI with 6spd manual. We love the car. Put over 20K on it in the first year. Took a week long road trip to DC from CO last summer.

I love geeking out on fuel mileage and trying to get the best possible mpg for a given trip.

I played the fuel mileage game a lot when I first got it. Now I pretty much drive the piss out of it and haven't had a noticeable drop in mileage. I am adamant about checking every tank at the pump, but I don't keep a log. 36mpg is about standard for a mix tank with heavy city traffic driving.

I drove down to Jersey a couple weeks ago which was about 250 miles away. According to the computer I averaged 38.5 mpg. This drive was cruise control on at 72 and very relaxed.

I drove home without cruise because of traffic and other conditions. I was constantly accelerating to 80mph and keeping up with fast moving traffic in the tri-state area. I got 40.5 mpg on the way home.

My car really shines around 55mph. On the back road highways of nh and vt I can easily get 45mpg.

Is yours an auto or a standard? With the standard I short shift a lot, or basically just skip gears. Accelerate up to highway speed in 4th and drop it over to 6th to cruise.

On the trip to D.C. we averaged 50mpg going there. Coming home we started to get antsy and picked up the speed and averaged 47mpg.

When you can average 40-50mpg, it opens up a whole new world of possibility for a road trip. It still gets me every time I fill up, we have nearly 600 miles on the trip odometer and only put in 14gals.

Mine is a standard. I skip gears and short shift a lot also, but not for efficiencies sake, just driving habit.

You got some impressive mileage on your trip.

The Jettas get slightly better mileage than Beetles from what I have read and the Passats are supposed to be better still. I also have the rag top (almost always down) with the wing, so my aerodynamics aren't the best.

I have heard temperature affects the mileage also. I have only had my car since last fall, so I can't say yet if I will see improvements in warmer weather.

Yes definitely true. I've noticed the mileage drops with ambient temps.

just drove 12hrs home from disneyland and averaged 75-90 mph, whole trip averaged me at 43.2 mpg. not too shabby.

So what kind of mileage are all you guys getting w/ the TDIs? What year did the engines change for the more strict emissions? I know there are websites where guys are talking about taking off the emissions stuff and getting 100 mpg. I'm really interested in getting one of these.

Mini is coming out w/ a diesel model next year that will be getting 68 mpg.

I am getting ~45 MPG commuting in moderate traffic in my 2013 Golf. Was down to 40-41 MPG in the Seattle winter weather. I am seeing it creep up now that we are approaching 60-70 degree days. I haven't taken any long trips yet, but I expect to be able to hit 50+ on longer highway trips.

I'm sure part of this is the weather, but don't forget most fuel stations switch to a winter mix in colder months, that IIRC, is less energy rich and can reduce mileage.

Winter mix is just no 1 diesel mixed into the no 2. It doesn't have as much of an impact as winter blend gas.
