I got around to trying out the 4x4 in my Blazer today and it's not OK. In 4 wheel drive the frontend engages but it jackhammers like its skipping teeth. But the noise is definetly coming from the T case. I'm thinking the chain is jumping teeth on the gears in the T case. So, what are my options? I can put a new chain in it. What other T cases will bolt to a TH350? Can't afford the doubler. Just trying to figure out my options at this point, it still goes fine in 2H.

Thanks- John

are you sure its not the front end??

mine had the same problem then looked and sure enough i shredded my spider gears in the front diff.

Mine did the same thing, I swapped the front end out for a spare I had and it still did it. while I was testing the front to see if it was still doing it the transfer case went out, big hole in the side with pieces falling out. so i swapped the transfer case with a spare I have and it still did it. I think it is my front driveshaft there is a lot of play in the front shaft at the slip, I dont know where else to look.

Isnt the 203 full time 4x4? So the chain and front diff would be turning all the time.
Did you mean you put it in 4H loc?
Or do you have a part time kit in it?

I belive it has a part time kit, but I didn't install it. I can have it in 2H with the hubs unlocked & if I drive forward the front driveshaft does not turn. I don't know if that means it has a kit for sure, but I think so. The noise is coming from the T case, you can feel the "skipping" in the T case shifter handle, + you have to hold it forward with a good amount of pressure to keep it in 4L otherwise it pops out on the first "skip". It still goes in what amounts to 2L, the rear wheels still drive, just no front.

I wish I was set up to make a video & post it on youtube! That would be easier than trying to type it out!

I really don't think it's the frontend, but I have been wrong before. The noise is coming from the middle area under the truck, then I bent down to listen/look & it is definetly sounding like its the T case.

So, if it is the chain do you guys have any advice on a good replacement? I guess I could just get a used one from the Junkyard, but I'd probly be right back here before too long.

Well, I hope I can figure this out!

Thanks- John

edit: do you guys think the shifter adjustments could be far off enough to cause these types of problems?

you must have a part time kit if you are able to do that. I would take a guess and say you 203's chain is stretched, mine was doing the same thing. I took it apart this weekend and found the chain to be stretched big time. I also found a broke off tooth on the main shaft, but the jumping and banging was coming from the chain.

Thanks! I researched a little online. Anyone know the deal about part time kits burning up the T case? I read on a couple places were people said the chain not moving in the case all the time was causeing it not to get good lubrication and thus ruining the T case.

Best place to buy chain?? Any heavy duty good ones out there??

Thanks- John

Yep,your supposed to drive it in 4x4 10mi for every 200mi.So the chain will throw oil into the "cup" for the shaft.
Tells all about it in this article.

you can find chains on ebay about $80-90. Or do what Im doing and just swap a np205 in there. You will need 205, and adapter for your trans.

I would entertain that thought as well, TONS of needle bearings fell out of the case when I took it apart it would be a PITA

It could be that the shift linkage is sloppy or misadjusted and the noise you are hearing is the dog teeth on the engagement ring skipping across the gear (because the shifter can't move the ring all the way over the gear).

203's are easy to find and cheap (or free). I would probably just replace it.
