Hello,
I recently purchased a 74' K5 (will do a intro here once I can take some pics
) I have a bone stock 74' K5 except for the part time.
It's got a 203 with WARN locking hubs. From my searches here it does have the part time conversion as it works in H with them being unlocked.
My question(s) are (and I've searched and haven't found it) - It started to snow today in Portland, and I wanted to put it in 4 wheel drive. I first put into 4 loc as per factory directions while in neutral, then turned the hubs to lock and off I went (in the snow).
I know it's bad to drive on the dry road w/ it in loc so I shifted it to H regular once it cleared up. Is it ok to drive with the hubs in locked position and in H regular? I'm assuming that the hubs are locking the axle shaft which is also turning the front driveshaft, however since it is in 2HI mode, it is spinning freely at the transfer case (ie no binding). With unlocking it the axle shafts spin free so it saves a little wear and tear on those and the front driveshaft?
Basically I want to make sure that on a ****ty day I can shift back and forth between 2HI and HILoc depending on the road conditions, and then later when I am back home unlock the hubs. Weather is not bad for 99% of the year so I would leave them unlocked for almost all the rest of the time.
The other question is what is the correct process to get it into lock/hi mode. Lock hubs first? Or Shift to H Loc first then lock the hubs?
Thanks,
Z
