i have a th400 but i dont know what t-case it had on it. if its made for a 208 can i put a 205 on it without swaping shafts?
Yes, if you have the short height, round pattern 205, which is found on '85 up to '91 K/V30/3500 trucks.

haha nice. so let me re-cap, i have th400, no idea what case come on it an i can just strap a 208 or 203 on it with no problems? but how can i use a 205 if they are 10 spline?
4wd TH400's come in 3 different output shaft lengths.
The shortest mates the 203 case.
The middle length mates the 208 and '85 on up 205 cases.
The longer shaft mates the '84 and older 205's.
To fit a 10 spline 205 to a 400, you're gonna have to get the 400 rebuilt with the correct 32 spline output shaft to fit your 205.

Chevy 205's can have 10, 27 or 32 splines.

Oh boy, I can't even remember the exact numbers but the middle one, IIRC, was like 3.5" or 4.5" long.
The shortest one for the 203 case was something like 1" or slightly longer.
The longest one was longer than 4.5" obviously, but again, I can't remember all the specific numbers.
