So I've got a 205 laying around whose front output can be significantly moved/shaken/whatever by simply grabbing hold of the flange and lifting up/down/side/side. what's wrong and what's it take to fix it?

Mine does this....I think it's the bearing for the front output. I'd assume a new bearing would fix the problem. But chances are if the front output is gone...the rest of the case could use a rebuild too (or the front driveshaft was to long and bottomed out into the case with suspension travel). Mine leaks a ton from this point. I'm not to concerned with it...I've got a spare that I plan to rebuild/twin stick. I just need a reason to get off my a$$.

you can grab hold of it and give it a good shake. it's way more movement than the one that's in my truck.

Its probably the front output bearing, but as mentioned if one is bad there may be others.

There aren't really any bearings in a 205 that are notorious for wearing out, so the bearing probably wore out from neglect (which again, would warrant inspection of the other bearings).

can just the one bearing be replaced? how do you go about getting the bearing - is it something a typical parts store will carry?

Yep, the front output bearing is pretty easy. Remove the yoke, seal retainer, and two snap rings and you're done (one of the snap rings is pretty stout, you'll need a good pair of snap ring pliers). Make sure not to let the front output move forward at all (I forget if you can spill needle bearings out this way but better safe than sorry).

I believe I still have a pretty new small front output bearing (10/30 spline output, a few years old) from my old 205. I'm sure its still in like new condition, shoot me a PM with your address and its yours for the cost of shipping (~$5 probably).

Is your nut tight? Hang on, that sounds way more personal than I meant for it to.
I mean is the nut on the end of the output shaft tight? If it works loose, the hub will be loose, but the shaft may still be tight.

interesting. i'll have to have my friend check it. (it's 5 hours away in Portland at a friends house. :doah: )

There are no needle bearings in the front output that will fall into the case, but I would still move the shaft as little as possible
