the housing on the pto is aluminum and theres no discernable tag on it. he says theres a bracket for a cable shift mechanism.
what could it be?
all pictured that will unbolt from the 205 will be given to me. whats a going rate for one of these?

when i put the tcase in N with the engine running i can run the pto in either direction? i would assume if i had the tcase in gear as well i could drive and have the winch going?

are the yokes and joints typical and easy to find? i.e. 1330 or something plentiful?
do i need a special pto winch to match it? i would guess any one would do.

thanks guys, i cant wait to get this going!

From my experiences with tcase PTO's you can't operate them unless the tcase is in neutral.

Ujoints are generally smaller than you driveshaft stuff. Anybody that can get you neapco/spicer stuff can get them for you. Just need measurements.

Make sure you are in NUETRAL!! do not drive and winch at the same time....And DO NOT REV THE MOTOR to "speed up" the winch....Trust me all kinds of things BREAK!!! Napa has or can get most pto parts for what you need...

I ran a 10k Ramsey PTO winch on my moose buggy for 17 years, it worked in high range, neutral and low range. I used it with a TH-400 tranny and I ran in first, second, third and reverse. With that said engage brain before putting PTO and tranny in gear, remember that whatever engine you are using is your winch motor. You can easily snap 3/8" cable if you aren't paying attention to what you are doing. You can winch with the t-case in gear but your tire speed will be greater than what the winch is pulling you forward, resulting in big ruts. If you forget to disengage the PTO once you start moving again you'll either pull the winch cable through the fairlead or you'll break something.

My new buggy will have an electric on the front but I may use the old winch on the rear. It isn't the best choice for self recovery but it is the best way to go for everything else that you might use a winch for. We use gin poles and the winch to lift moose off the ground for skinning and gutting, one of the rigs that I've been around uses a 12k Ramsey RE worm style electric and you can hear it working once it starts picking the moose off the ground, with my PTO there was no discernable change in the engine rpm.

Not that he's always right, but my dad always says let the winch do the work...I guess that means with a proper winch, you shouldn't need to try and drive the vehicle. Perhaps you hardcore guys do need it, just in case the vehicle starts going somewhere you don't want? I'd think that would involve proper setup of the winch operation though.

My dads is an old Ramsey (8000lb I think) and has had it at least twenty years...it will easily pull the truck or anything ever hooked to it, including other rigs.

I would assume all to be cable shifted, mechanical linkage of some type would be a nightmare, although I suppose nowadays they might be able to use solenoids or something.

From looking at his driveshaft, they are pretty small joints. He had to replace one not too long ago and it was a bit of a hassle to find them. They look to be about the size of the joints used on the Jeep steering shafts.
