so i swapped in a 465/205 in place of my 700/208, and it seems that my speedo is consistently 10 mph slow - not a ratio like i would expect, but at 25, i'm going 35 and at 45, i'm going 55. is the speedo gear in the 205 different from that in the 208 in such a way that this would be the case?

Well I think the 208's had color coded interchangeable gears depending on your tire sizes and gear ratio's (or was it the 241's ?). 205's aren't the same. As far as I know, you just gotta get one of those speedometer adapters that screw onto the outside of your t-cases speedo output and change the ratio.

is this something most parts stores carry?

No. You usually have to get them custom made. IIRC, it runs around $80-$100 from a speedometer shop. I have one that is a 1:1 ratio that came on my truck.....don't ask. I can't explain why either.
