I pulled the th350/205 out of my 70 blazer andI am replacing it with a SM465/205 out of a 78. The 70 205 has the front yoke and the 78 205 has the front flange setup. Is one better than the other? The older transfer case also has the bolt holes on the side as the stock crossmember goes above the frame rails and has a bracket to attach to the transfer case. The newer transfer case does not have the threaded holes....do I need to use this bracket with manual tranny? I was hoping I could just use the newer crossmember and tranny assembly, find the new length and bolt it on from the bottom using spacers to adjust height. Any body got any ideas?

The flat flange is a 30 spline flange and offers more choices of U-joint combonations than the 10 spline yoke.

You could always drill and tap the holes in the case for the earlier mount.

That's a good idea...I didn't think about that. The holes are already there, just not drilled all the way and tapped.

Even barring the different options available in joints, the flat flange shaft is a HECK of a lot easier to get bolted/unbolted than the earlier setup.

I have the same 205 case as you have on the SM465, I was wondering if they just forgot to mill/drill/tap mine for the side bracket but I guess they didn't do that in '78. You may find yourself breaking the mounting feet off the SM465 adapter though, I had a pole up for a while and it seems like that's a common problem. I've broken two of them so far, both times were because of shockloads being sent down the driveline (broken D60 shaft then a busted driveshaft ujoint). :doah:

The flange is the better option. For one, you get a CV joint to bolt onto it. As far as the holes go, I would drill/tap and use the extra bracket. I broke my adapter a few times as well. All of them were from getting the front end a few feet off the ground. It only takes a few minutes to do it, so you might as well.

After looking at the original crossmember I think I'm going to drill and tap the newer case and use the original crossmember with the transfer case bracket. The original crossmembers is MUCH beefier and mounts on the top of the frame rails on the upper rail and the lower rail. After thinking about it, if the factory was concerned about torque with a stock 350 maybe I should be concerned with a built 406:D

Since I just sold my old 205 without measuring the holes for the mounting bracket.....:doah: Can anyone tell me the depth of the holes and the thread so I don't drill into the the case? Thanks!

I can get you the info later tonight when i get home from work if you haven't gotten it by then.
