I just bought a 1988 1/2 ton 4x4 pos ifs truck. it has what I believe a transfercase problem but I'm not sure, I have not had time to get under it yet as I got it this morning and had to go to work, So i'm not real sure what case is in it yet, I assume it is a 208, any way In 2 high and 4 high
under a good load, as in putting the petal to the floor it lets out a real good grinding sound and does not really want to move, if you let off and press say half throttle it takes off fine. if you put it in 4 low it has no problems at all no matter how hard you take off. it seams like maybe the chain is slipping to me but I would think it would do it all the time.
Is this a sign of the shifter fork problem 208's have? the shifter works nice and smooth.I'm at a loss on what the problem is and don't want to throw money at it as the truck is not worth to much. any help would be great.

Sounds like the input gear to planetery connection. I dont think its a linkage deal 'cause it goes to low and 2-4. Probably related to the range fork being broke or worn.

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like a rebuild
