208 Fluid??

If im not mistaken Dex 5 is considered syn with massive amounts of additives developed for Chrysler in an effort to keep their poo poo auto transmissions in one piece:D.

I just bought a rebuilt case, and the place I bought it from required me to run 5w-30 synhetic motor oil in it for their warranty to be valid. What's up with that? I always thought the 208 took ATF. 6 qts of synthetic oil is a little expensive to run in a t-case, but I didn't want to void the warranty.

i know its not good to do this but my 208 leaked like a pig so i filled it with gear oil....stopped the leak and it was used every weekend for 3 years, and it worked perfect....the only reason i changed it i got a 205 cheap...

First Ive heard on the gear oil in the 208 bit. I will say being im into Harleys theres enough controversy regarding using ATF, 10/40 motor oil or HD chain case oil in the primary to start a war. Factory now uses either 20/50 syn,the old stuff was like 50wt gear oil,the likes of many of the hipo clutch builders reccomend ATF only for less clutch drag. Really a similar setup with the drive chain, gears and clutch plates. Id imagine they dont reccomend 90wt in the 208/241 etc because of the use oil pumps to get lube around. 90 wt is pretty gooey in freezing temps and probably would crater the pump.

I would not run any Xfer case married to an auto trans filled with anything other than ATF. reason being if the input shaft seal goes out you get gear lube or oil in your trans. That usually = death for your auto trans. That is why the 208 and 241 were designed to use ATF for lube. You can use 5-30 in them without harm. But i advise against it if you have a auto trans.
