Have an 84 jimmy with the 208 t case and 700r tran took it out over the weekend and it would occasionally slip out of 4 hi and when going from n to 2wd it grinds so i had to shut it off to get it out of 4wd, could it be a problem with the shift linkage or is it goin out on me?

Needs rebuild. Shift forks and pads common to wear out on those. It will pop out of 4hi under power, I've seen them pop out of 4lo too. Mine popped out of 2hi just driving down the street :eek1:. Once they pop out of gear they just grind.

A little bit of grinding while shifting into gear is normal if you're not doing it right. There are different methods you can try when shifting into 4hi or 4lo to prevent grinding gears. But that's not gonna change the fact you need a rebuild.

does a rebuild kit come with new shift forks and pads or would i have to buy them seperate. I never torn into a t case is there any tricks to it that would help? appreciate the input.

Good luck finding the mode fork. They are impossable to find. If you cant find one, i have one ill give you if you pay shipping. I also have all the internals if you need to replace anything.

I appreciate it I'm gonna look around and see what i can find

When mine did it the truck was my daily driver. I didn't have time to learn about t-cases, tear it down, order parts, wait for parts, etc... I pulled the t-case, brought it to a local trans shop that I know and trust, they rebuilt it and I had it back the next day with a warrantee for $600 out of pocket. He told me what was wrong in it when I described what it was doing, knew exactly what it was and what to look for as well as what it needed to be fixed and updated so it wouldn't do it again. I don't remember exactly but it was something about the shift forks hanging up/dragging causing wear. Said he had done thousands of them in the 80s and 90s when these t-cases were a lot more common under trucks.

You could find another and swap it in. I did that when I first got the truck (original t-case was doing the same thing). That one lasted less than a year. So, swapping in another good case is a possibility, but a gamble.
