208 vs 241

I saw one near you??

I saw a GM 4x4 chassis that had just the drivetrain on it at middleboro auto salvage a month or so ago, that had a th350 tranny coupled to a NP208 or 241? with an aluminum spacer block between the 2 that was not a factory looking part!--It might be just what you are looking for--the bummer is its either buried under all the snow,or it might have been scrapped already(maybe not,it wasnt exactly easy to get to,where it was, there was another chevy truck dumped on top of it)--and unless you knew where too look, you arent likley to even see it--

I was looking for a TH350 4x4 tranny for my 74 K20,and that was the only one in the whole yard, all the other GM 4x4's there were 700R4's or 4-speeds..I decided my truck was too far gone to bother fixing it up again--If you are interested in looking for it,I could show you where it was(bring your snowshoes!)--I doubt if even the yard owners know its there, they have so much stuff,I always bring stuff up to the shack to pay for it,and they say"where'd you find THAT??..

then get the back half of a Mopar case and make your own SYE...cheap is good

I was under the impression that the Dodge 208 rear-case was not a simple bolt-on? I thought there was some machine work involved... not much, but enough to keep it from being a plug-n-play type of swap.

Where in the yard

Diesel, where in the yard at Middleboro salvage? If it is there i will find it. I love shopping the junkard.

I am now thinking of just going NP205 route. You know anyone that has one for sale? I called everybody I know and came up empty. You know Jon Dixon? I don't really know him well, but I stopped by and didn't even have one, he always has everything I need.

If you have any good leads, call me 508 641 3123, I am getting desperate, truck has been down for two weeks.

I'll try to describe where....

I dont know how familiar you are with the yard at middleboro auto salvage, but the chassis I saw was way down in the back of the yard,in one of the two new sections they cut trees down and openned up at the extreme rear of the yard, near where the large GM cars and station wagons are,( not in the usual truck section of the yard, its after all the ford cars and others)its the new section on the left, just as you enter it,the chassis is on your left, under another chevy pickup cab and chassis with no bed(I think it was a beige scottsdale) ,the chassis under that truck has a th350 and a NP208 or241 on it,and a burnt motor still all bolted together--its probably drifted under the snow though,so you might not be able too see it,without knowng exactly where it was--hopefully it didnt get junked when they shut down for a week last month to do nothing but scrap the yard out....

I'm going to part my 74 K20 out soon(should have been done long ago, before the blizzard!)and it has a 400 small block that runs ok,but should be gone thru,a NP205 case from a 72,and a TH350 that has no reverse, and an SF 14 bolt with 4.10's and a D44 8 bolt front end--the rear axle cover is rotted and leaks,so is the oilpan, and the windsheild is cracked, front rotors very crispy, but new ball joints with very low miles on them, many useable parts--the only things I wanted to save were the flatbed and crane,The plow setup, and the motor, but if someone made the right offer I'd sell the whole thing--I'm running out of room for snow, dont need a "dead horse" in the yard, and I need money more now than the truck...

What makes the 241 a better case is the oil pump, on the 208 it has a slinger, other than that they are pretty close, with the deeper gear going to the 241

Cool thanks! :) I will most likely end up with a 208 behind a th700 since that would be more common and not in a beaten vehicle. But now I know more about the 241 for other things :D

question to all? are 208 tcases closly related to gov-boms? :D  :cool1:
No, they are not even close. The gov loks in 10 and 12 bolts are weak(not a 14BFF) unlike a 208 case. The 208 is strong enough for most people and it's main weaknes is not strength, it's pounding the aluminum housings against rocks that cracks them.

Ask if anyone has every broken a 208 wheeling.......you will get minimal answers that they have, besides cracking them open on rocks and the usuall failures because they have 200,000 miles on them.

For the record, I have a swapped in 241 and like it because of the few upgrades like the oil pump and slightly higher torque rating but if I still had a 208 I wouldn't even consider messing with it, epecially since my low range with the 241 is almost too low for the rest of my K5.

Very good point! :waytogo: That's why the 208 is the right choice for a dd/ non beaten rig behing the th700 imho. A lot more of them than the mech speedo version 241 ;)

They are pretty much good for everything besides rock crawling. Not just behind a th700R4, but would work just fine behind a diesel and th400. (the military did it) Heck, I even have a 241 behind my 47RE auto and 24v cummins in my 3/4 dodge.....but it's the HD model. :p:

It's pretty darned hard to break the chain and other internals of a transfer case when it's in good shape...

i think both 208 and 241 would be fine rockcrawlers if you fabbed up good skidplates. alot less weight than the cast iron 203/205. besides, even tho a cast iron case can handle the abuse, it makes more sense to slide on a skid plate than it does to put stress on your drivetrain, no matter what its made out of.

I agree.

Well I am thinking for a dd type rig. Something like the dually burb that I don't even have the truck to start the project yet. Or the 6.2 to put in it.. or any of it :haha: But I am thinking when I get the extra cash I will find me a good deal on a burb and put a 6.2 in it. The 700 will be good for it as it will be a dd/normal driving rig and not for hauling or wheeling. I have a pair of crew duallys atm that will be the haulers. :D So I chose the 6.2/700/208 for availability and milage.
