The problem.....
Re grooving a deep groove. Mostly the outside groove on the bigger lugs due to rock wear, but the others need to go deeper too.

The next problem.....
Being that there deep already ( Plus the tires are hard cause their old ) the groover I have would just bend the blade in less than an inch of cutting even after heating the tire with a torch.
Pict of how deep the blade needs to go at 1/2" wide.

Things I tried....

4-1/2" x 1/4" Grinding wheel... Smoked to high hell, more melting than cutting
4-1/2" x 1/4" Concrete cutting wheel... Same results as above.

So while at Harbor freight I saw theses.....

Sandwiched two of them on the grinder....

Cuts like butter. Not much smoke, just smells like a burnout in the shop. A little on the ruff side but does the job.

I'm going to pull the tire to do the rest of it. Also I'm going to do the rest of it outside so there is no clean up and the shop doesn't stink.

I ran across someone else using the same tool on another forum. Looks dangerously fun.

Actually it doesn't pull very bad. Just gotta watch you don't go to fast and cut into the next lug.

Don't worry, I will post up picts if I lose a digit or two.

Wood chisel shanked up in a air hammer , then heat the chisel red hot works awesome you get quite a few cuts before you need to reheat

I have a chainsaw cutoff wheel.
Haven't lost my finger/hand/arm/head yet.
Have a healthy fear of that thing too.
Not that getting your hand into a cut off wheel would fun, but it seems like I really pay more attention and put on heavier gloves if I chuck up the chain saw wheel.

It's really a mental thing.

I just had to look it up.... Chainsaw max rpm 8500 - 9500 vs 4-1/2" grinder 11000 - 12000 rpm.

Probably not a big deal...But sure bring the suck if it came apart at speed.

It will only hurt for a few seconds!.....

Might as well just use the chain saw,and skip buying a grinder and the chain wheel!....

I built my rustic log bed with help of of these wheels, really much faster to make a small cut or to gouge into the wood then firing up a chainsaw.IMAG0117.jpg

Dog approved too I see !..:D..

I've watched a few chain saw artists carve some pretty intricate things with their chain saws...but they did switch to the grinder wheel and dremel tools for the really fine details..
